Purchase or not?

We are going to look at 2005 Country Coach Inspire with 86,000 miles, not sure if that is something to be concerned with. I have currently only owned gas models and still do as of today with little to no problems. If the rig has been serviced regularly, is there anything in particular I should be concerned with or look for? TIA

The later CC's can have the Cummins ISX 600 or 650. The 650 is prone to breaking the intake valves off in #6. Mine has done it twice and I had it rebuilt again last year to get the latest parts. $53,000 in engine repairs in 5 yrs of ownership.

I had an 05 inspire and it had a C9 Cat. Seemed like a good engine. You can get the engine number and check with cat and they can give you any history they have.

Purchase or not- 2005 Inspire

Hi, We have a 2005 Inspire DaVinci 330 w/CAT C9. Your most important item , IMO, is the maintenance log. In a coach that is 15+ years old, this becomes extremely important. Gives you an idea of not only what's been serviced and when , but more significantly what has NOT been serviced. I do all of my own maintenance, so I have some good experience with some of the nuances and issue with this model.

Here's some age-related and manufacturer-related items to look for:

1. Aluminum radiator - Beware, these are leakers and a copper/steel unit are, IMO, the desired replacement. Could run you 6-8K$ to replace the aluminum.

2. Dry/Wet PTO- PTO is the unit slaved off the trans that provides hydraulic power to the hydraulic cooling and AND the power steering unit. When shipped from the factory, these had no lube supply to the spline, which is the connecting point to the trans. Unless manually lubed, periodically, they fail and are costly to replace. CC had a recall, (I think) , to convert these to a wet unit. There is a plethora of info on these forums and on the web to verify the installation of the wet conversion.....it's easy to spot.

3. At 15+ years, many things just wear out. I just replaced the Onan genset water pump v-belt and temperature sensor. Not because they failed, but as a preemptive measure to avert any trouble later. because the genset is NOT on a slide, I had to drop it from underneath, but was able to "land it" on 4 jack stands and change the 2 components from there. Not difficult, but time consuming.

4. Most likely, your ride height valves will fail, it they haven't been replaced already. Front valve was easy, rear was a bit of a bear, due to access.
5. Fuel Pressure Regulator connection- this is a push-to-connect tube connection on the top of the engine, that returns fuel back to the fuel tank. Truth is, they leak. Fixed this by going to Lowes, purchases a new fitting, slightly trimmed back the tubing for a "fresh" connection surface and, for $30, repaired the leak. This top engine access is readily available through the bedroom "hatch". Ours started leaking in a campground in Goodyear AZ.
6. Check all slide seals, windows seals, door seals as they dry out over time.

These are some, not all, of the major items. Genset hours, a/c-heat pump units, HEUI pump (engine fuel pump) failure are some other expensive replacement/repair costs if they fail.

My oil change interval is about 5-6K miles to mitigate HUEI issues. "Adept Ape" on Youtube is a pro CAT diesel mechanic with some GREAT info on this C9 and other CAT engines. Suggest you check him out.
Also, seek out Smitty and 2Stroker on this forum as they have some valuable input and are good resources as well.

Bottom line, find a GOOD RV inspector who can thoroughly go over the coach and provide a comprehensive systems report for your prospective purchase.
Best of luck to you!!

If you can get the engine SN you can call CAT support and they will give you any history they have on the motor and if there are any outstanding recalls. I would also take it to a local cat dealer and have them hook it up to their computer and look for fault codes. I had a 400 HP C9 with low boost pressure warnings that from the outside ran just fine. Never a warning message. It turned out to be carbon buildup on the wastegate shaft that spraying a bit of WD40 and a few taps resolved. It became part of our service ritual. Just a thought.

If it passes your first inspection I'd suggest getting oil and coolant samples for engine, transmission, and generator. These are relatively inexpensive and quick and will tell you if there are any imminent problems.

You should maybe look at Keana Coach in Oregon. He buys only good coaches and guarantees them after going over with a fine tooth comb. He has our old coach for sell. A beautiful Monaco 2004, updated, low mileage very well maintained and great, fast engine. Detroit. Good luck..
