Question on cherry cabinets.

I have a question for CC owners. I have been looking at CC's in the 2002-2004 range and it seems like the cherry cabinets in most have a lot of damage to the finish. Is this typical in these year coaches? I have cherry cabinets in my house that are at least 15 years old and I don't have that kind of damage to the finish. It looks like it's mostly water damage, top edge of the kitchen drawers for example, but could also be due to fingernails. Is it just soft finish material? Can they be fixed? If so, how hard to fix?

Cherry Cabinets are the most prone to show scratches, and water spots. Howard’s Feed n Wax should be applied once a year. It helps protect and will hide most blemishes. You could also lightly sand and reapply a polyurethane.

I go over ours at least once each year with orange oil. It brings out the shine and covers most blemishes in the wood.

Yes the cherry cabinets in our new to us 2000 Magna are a bit chewed up on the tops of the lower cabinets and drawers as you said. We have not gotten around to trying to fix them back up. But we may try Howards to see how it works. All the cabinets could use some brightening up.

We have the medium cherry. They all look pretty good except some of the finish (laquer?) is chipped away around the knobs on the most often used cabinet doors. Orange oil does seem to hide that for a short time. I will try some of the Howard's stuff since it seems to be highly recommended.

I cracked one of the large slide trim boards couple of years ago. I removed it, repaired it and refinished it with satin polyurethane. It looks really nice. I may remove some of the doors and do the same.

The solid cherry wood cabinets my my Camelot are coming up on 11 years old and still look like new. No cracks or any type of peeling of the finish on the tops of drawers or doors. I have never applied any type of oil on the wood as I feel (IMHO) that it's not recommend by the maker. I use lemon endust only when dusting the finishes.

The coach I just purchased had a lot of scuffs and dry spots that I rubbed with a dark cherry stain and a rag, looks as good as new now.

cherry cabinets

Our 2008 Inspire shows no signs of deterioration, may look for Howards for future polish!

Ditto. Same rig. 09. We only dust.
It looks like marine spar varnish. Tough stuff.

Use Howard’s Restor A Finish, stuff works like magic!! They have many different colors, apply first to damaged areas, then the Feed N Wax

Good morning and Happy Thanksgiving wherever you are! I have a question regarding walnut cabinets in an Intrigue (1999). We found one that we really like mechanically, structurally, etc. However, the walnut cabinetry is dark and very "grainy". It is not to our personal taste. Would we do ourselves and the coach a disservice to paint the wood in the coach a different color (off white or other lighter color)? Does this decrease the resale value? I appreciate comments on this aspect of owning a used coach. Thank you.

Only my opinion, but I think painting the wood cabinetry would, indeed, reduce the resale value. I have rarely seen painted woodwork in anything but earlier MHs, such as yours, and, to me, they look very dated given the design of the cabinetry and wood trim. Personally, I never liked the solid colors, usually a shade of white, on the interiors I've seen. Some new coaches have solid color cabinets and trim, but the design is more linear/Euro, and it fits a modern look.

Now, you might consider a whitewash finish which lightens the overall color but is not an opaque covering. That, however, could be a very tedious task as all the clear coating must be removed for the whitewash to penetrate. It would not get rid of the grainy surface, but the wood would be a lighter shade.
