Shower Brass Removal

I searched the forum but did not get much help related to getting the old brass doors/fixtures off the shower. The shower is a straight stall with a seat and a flat door. The main shower valve is simple enough to replace but not the sliding rail the head hangs on. Does the door mount simply screw into the stall fiberglass and backing framing? I would assume a local glass shop could provide a new door assembly. I did see some owners painted the brass door but that does not sound like a good long term solution?
Have nearly all the other brass in the coach updated to brushed nickel.

On our 04 Allure High Cascade mode, our shower is a U shape, with a straight door (Vs curved or one with angles glass panels.). It had a small sidelight panel, and then the door itself.

We went with a Bursh Nickel Holcam door, all pine piece, no sidelight panel. It's a magnetic vs mechanical latch. Magnet on the Holcam is not the full surface where the door closes to the side jamb, as it is on the Agalite line. But the glass is the same, and same quality of materials. When we travel, we have small plastic squeeze clamp we use to secure the door to the angle jamb, from the top side. We went with a no clear glass, to help hide some of the hard water build up. And also the special coating (Don't recall what it's called.) to reduce water adherence.

The DW is very pleased with the result. And yes, it was an easy removal via screws and then we used a combo of plastic razor blades and acetone rags to remove lingering sealant. The new door and hinged worked well. The unit we chose did not come with a bottom sweep angle piece, it uses the squeegee on the bottom of the door sweep to sweep across the top of the fiberglass pan's curb you step over to get into the shower. We had three screw holes in this curb, where the sidelight had been attached, that we patched with I believe it was bone color sealant. It's only visible when you step in or out of the shower. And because we know it exits, we still see it... But, again the DW is 99.9% pleased overall!!!

We bought ours from Home Depot, as the local Glass Store wanted about 2 1/2 times more money then what they charged. And arranged to drive to the place that installs for Home Depot in the area. (We were in Newport, Oregon. Ordered from Corvallis Home Depot, and about 10 days later we drove to Lebanon, Oregon to do the install. Took the installers less then an hour do install. And zero problems with the install...

Here is a link to the door supplier/manufacturer:

Hartung Glass Industry - Shower Door Products - Agalite - Holcam

We still have the Brass swap out to do on the inside, so will follow this thread and see what you come up with! When we get ready to do ours (If you do not already have the answers for us!), we will work with Kevin Waite and or Premier RV to help source the proper swap over trim to nickel...

GOOD LUCK TO YOU,
Smitty

We decided to keep the Brass.

The colors czars that want to control our life will soon decide that brass is "in" again.

When we first bought our 2005 back in 2015, the first thing I did was get rid of the bright brass. A replacement bathroom door lockset was installed. I bought cabinet pulls from Lowes and replacement hinges directly from Newmar. I removed the brass light fixtures and disassembled each of them, scuff sanded and painted each with Rustoleum's satin nickel spray paint. It went on nicely and provided a great finish. At the same time, I disassembled most of the shower door. I took the head rail and two of the sliding glass doors out and cleaned, scuffed and painted them. Again, a great finish. The remainder of the shower door, the bottom rail and the third door as well as the two vertical pieces on each side were not removed. I didn't want to have to reseal everything, so I painted them in place. That was a chore. I covered the rest of the bath in plastic then started spraying. It got foggy in there quickly, but the end result was good. The paint adhered well to everything except (as expected) the silicone sealant. Other odds and ends were changed out and today I can proudly say there is no bright brass in the coach except for the bathroom door hinges and the latch and striker on the hall pocket door. Personally, I think the removal of the brass alone made the inside of the coach appear many years newer than it really is.

Good luck with your renovation.

I don't doubt that at all; in fact, you can see that trend coming back now in high end home construction. Regardless, neither the wife nor I ever cared for that look (actually didn't like it at all) even when it was popular.

I want to do this to mine too. The shower doors look like the worst of it to do. Maybe I'll paint it like harleyjt. I did a quick count the other day, it was like 36 drawer / cabinet pulls and 62 hinges, lol. I always hated the brass. Nothing to do with being "in" or not, kinda like putting fake gold plating on everything. Next will be to get rid of some of the mirrors that the 99-2000's coaches thought were cool.

De-Brass Progress

Got quite a bit done today. The shower door comes off rather easy all from the shower stall side, no need to access the back side. Used a razor blade to get silicone off. Fixtures are American Standard and you can purchase a trim kit in brushed nickel or other finishes for $33. The sliding shower head/bar is a little more at $100. All screwed in from the shower side. Removed the all pulls, handles and replaced them for under $75. The handles on the mirrors are attached with a double sided foam adhesive, comes off with a putty knife. Have a new bath sink fixture coming and installed a pop up drain today. An AmazonBasic 5 piece bath set for $36 will take care of bath towel, hand towel, robe hanger, TP roll.

Found a Gustafson Vanity Light - Satin Nickel - White Glass - Led vanity fixture on etrailer https://www.etrailer.com/RV-Lighting...77-000324.html for $50. The F15T8 fluorescent fixtures used throughout the coach are expensive to replace with LED equivalent so I tried a $11 retro kit. Not happy with the color though...little too blue for my likes. I was pretty easy to install and reasonable in cost.

Found latches for the pocket doors and 3" hinges for the bath door as well.

I'm installing a frosted film on the bedroom mirrored closet with a decorative decal. When its done I'll put some pics on here. Too many mirrors!!

Kitchen mirrored back splash comes off with a putty knife. It's held on with silicone calk that cane be scraped off but not to the level you could leave the wood exposed. I'm going to put ceramic tile on using silicone again and grout the joints.

I'm down to the hinge on the front A/V cabinet that is brass but don't think I'll worry about that.

Not sure how to rotate the pics??

Thanks for the tip on a frameless door. I didn't find one yet so I'll chase that down next.

More to come....

Windward - I think I can help rotate 2nd and 3rd photo but not sure about 4th what it is for. Looks like a ceiling lighting fixture... Does that also need to be rotated?

Edit: Rotated 2nd and 3rd.

And how do you rotate pics? Yes the last one doesn't really matter and it is the ceiling fixture.

I did it on my laptop: download --> rotate --> save --> upload.

I've been busy working on a laundry list of upgrades for the last month. The shower was difficult to get an answer and quote for a replacement.
Finally got a quote for a new Fresco door priced at $1,438 plus tax. So I tried sand blasting the brass off which worked pretty good. My little blaster was not enough to do all 18 pieces so I took it to a sand blasting and power coat company who quoted us $150 to blast and power coat all the metal pieces. I'll post some pics when they are done.

I'm nearing the end of my $10K update project. All the brass is gone, carpet and entry tile removed and replaced with vinyl planks, mirrors are gone, mirror on wardrobe covered with a static cling film, lighting all replaced with LED including brass wall sconces, sleeper sofa re-upholstered, all fluids/filters changed, fan controller updated to wax valve, wet kit installed on PTO but still waiting for the shower parts to come back from sandblasting and powder coating. A temporary shower curtain is in place for the time being.

Still to do--- front TV cabinet downsizing- tired of hitting my head (ceiling mount TV?), get HDMI to back TV somehow, window replacements.

I will get pics of the shower when the parts come back from the shop and get reassembled.

This work is such an improvement long overdue on a 16 year old coach.
