Slide cylinders short stroke on one side

I, over the years, have fixed my front slide problems. I've fixed a leaking cylinder, bleed the system to correct a ratcheting slide and replaced solenoids, etc. But this one has me puzzled!

Both the upper and lower cylinders on the left side of my front slide does not hit the stops when fully extended. If you go outside and measure the slide extension, there is a 2.5 inch difference from side to side. It goes in all the way with no issues.

When you first deploy the slide, both upper and lower cylinders on the right side moves before the left. As the slide goes out, the upper and lower cylinders on their respective sides are synchronized. There are no major ratcheting difficulties. When the right side is fully extended, the left side stops short. In other word, both the upper and lower cylinders on the left side short stroke.

The immediate thought is something wrong with the synchronizing cylinder, or is there another component to look at first, as this cylinder is going to be a problem to fix.

It does sound like your syncro cylinder needs centering. That's the first thing I would try.

I would check the hydraulic tank level when your slides are out and determine if you have enough fluid to push the cylinders to the full out position.

It's my understanding you should check the fluid level when all cylinders are retracted. When full during retraction, the reservoir is sized to allow sufficient fluid for full extension.

For the two slide coach the rear slide should be extended and the front slide in. When checking the fluid level, just the tip of the dip stick should show fluid.

The fluid level is correct for this unit. I have never seen any information on centering the synchronizing cylinder in any of the manual I've read. Does anybody have the “'how to do this” information on this?

What seems strange to me is the left side does not continue to travel after the right side hits the stops.

Somebody recommended I exchange the four left/right lines on the synchronizing cylinder to see if the problem go to the other side. However, there are eight lines going to that assembly, and before I do that, I better know exactly what I'm doing.

Since the motor home is stored 5 miles away from home, calling HWH at this time of year will not work for me. Last time they returned my call on another issue, I was traveling down an interstate. I normally deal with them in January when the call volume is down, but if this cylinder take time to fix or buy I want to start the process soon.

How do I know which of the two HWH systems are used on my coach without pulling panels apart?

I do see some coaches that have a lower step down portion [external view] in front slide with short external storage door for generator.

My coach has same size [height] lower storage door for generator, is that a clue?

First, accurately identify your HWH leveling and slide systems.
This ID's your leveling system.



This ID's your slide-room system.
HWH only makes two basic style systems, A and B.

Obtain the APxxxx number from your slide-room system.

My 500 series HWH panel does not resemble any of the ones on your attached link so OP don't sweat it if you do not have an exact replica of one on the attached link. Please keep us in the loop.

HWH troubleshooting procedure on the problem

According to HWH. To see if the synchronizing cylinder was the problem, they had me switch two lines on the synchronizing cylinder and four on the "back pressure valve" to see if the problem went to the other side of the slide. This did not work. Same situation.

Then they had me retract the slide and disconnect the four attaching nuts and retract the cylinders using the EXTEND button. (Follow directions to do a cylinder air bleeding procedure). They asked me to remove one hydraulic line on the cylinder they thought was the concern. On my unit, it was the line that went to a 90-degree elbow fitting on my cylinder. After that, l was instructed to hit the EXTEND button again, and if fluid came out of the disconnect line, there was an internal seal issue. Bottom line, needs to be rebuilt.

DO NOT HIT THE RETRACT BUTTON WITH THE LINE DISCONNECT, I WAS TOLD, OR THERE WILL BE FLUID EVERYWHERE. Call HWH for complete details on this procedure, please.

Now your help, I replace the upper right side cylinder and that was a bear to do even with the curtain access behind the driver's seat. This upper left hand side cylinder has a little hole where you can just see the bolts that mount it to the wall. Do you have to remove the spice rack wall to do this job? And if so, how.

The short stroke issue is what my coach suffered from but in my case it was the forward end, which was ultimately accessible "behind the curtain". Mine was due to a snap ring from one of the lower rollers had failed or fallen off along with the roller, top was in place but the pin was bent. When extending the slide would go out and stop short as the upper roller would not travel correctly into the track, as the bend roller would attempt to enter the track it would pitch the slide up and jam the lower portion against the floor.

As you've found the rear end of the slide would be a nightmare to access I don't know how to gain the access you need, best of luck.
