Voltage at house batteries when fully charged?

2001 Intrigue, 2 year old 8D batteries (all 3), Trace engineering 200 Amp Inverter Charger

Remote states the charger is in Float Mode, showing 12.6 Volts at batteries. Is this what everyone else is seeing? Trying to figure out if I have an issue with what appears to be originally installed inverter/ charger.

While charging, you could see upwards of 13 + volts. With the charger off and the batteries stabilized (rested for a couple hours), full charge is about 12.6 to 12.7 Volts

12.6 means no charge. check breaker on inverter.

The two above posts are correct and are not contradictory.


If the batteries are disconnected from a charger and have stabilized, 12.6-12.7v indicates they are fully charged.


If still connected to charger and in "float" mode, 13.4-13.5 should be the reading.


OP, since you are still in float mode and your reading is 12.6, the charger or, as mentioned the circuit breaker from the charger, is suspect.

The only change I would add is that healthy batteries (Lead Acid) with a healthy charger should be ~13.2V while in float...... I would check the batteries first with a hydrometer then the output at the leads from the inverter.

If you have a Battery Tempeture Sensor ( BTS ) connected to your inverter/charger, unplug it and see if your float voltage comes up to 13ish volts.

They sense battery temps to control charging voltage and are often damaged while replacing batteries.

If bad leave it unplugged. The inverter/charger default to 77°F.

A little low , before condemning the converter are you sure your voltmeter is accurate especially if it isn’t digital.

Great info! I was looking at the sensor and was curious if that would have an impact if failed. I’ll try that now.

Thanks for the tip on the meter, I use a Fluke 87V with true RMS.

This forum is the best! I unplugged my battery temp sensor and it went to 13.2 volts for float charge. I will purchase a new sensor and install when we get home. Thanks for the info, hope this helps someone else in the future.

12.6 is static full charge voltage of battery not being charged.

Float voltage varies, depends on exact battery for exact voltage but general rule is 2.25 volts per cell or 13.5 volts while being float charged.

Any more and they Gass out.

Temperature matters too, temperature controlled may vary this.
