Some larger coaches use a PTO off the Allison tranny to drive a hydraulic fluid pump for the engine fan and perhaps other applications. At some point, it was determined that a "wet kit" needed to be install "after-market" to properly lube the PTO using tranny fluid..best guess????

WetPTO

The cooling fan and power steering are driven off a PTO (Allison) with a dry, splined shaft. The “wet” kit converts to a lubricated spline. $900 for parts and 5 hours labor. Must do item before 35K miles.

$900 for parts? Why not use an electric fan switched by a thermostat?

Not practical. Too many BTU's to dissipate to be done by electricity unless a very high-amp alternator and multiple electric fans are used.

Can you do it-- sure. Just bring a (LARGE) check book.

A fan isn't going to do much for the power steering.

Damage is likely already done to the spline that the wet kit would lubricate. When failure happens there will be no warning. You will lose power steering and radiator fan. My cost of repair was over $4000 and the pump was very hard to find. CAT 13 with Allison 4000.

This guy was the first to come up with a PTO kit. JOHN DAVIS RV SERVICES INC.

Listen to the above poster. Without the PTO kit, you will loose steering for sure. Had a friend not heed the PTO story and he almost lost the coach due to loss of steering

I’ve seen CATs that did not need the PTO driven from the tranny as they already had a accessory drive off of the engine.

I wouldn’t bet on any mileage estimate before checking/renewing the splines between the PTO and the hydraulic pump. Our rig had around 20K on the clock. I pulled the pump and was pretty shocked at the condition of the splined shafts (male and female) between the pump and the PTO drive. Dry rusty dust ad worn splines. Nasty

We lucked out
I am guessing PO lubricated spline from time to time
We purchased at 40k had wet kit installed and inspection said everything looked great

I am pretty sure this coach (*2008 MagSPL250 Driveline Dana rear and Cummins ISX 600).
has never had the wet kit is that a death sentence for splines if the owner did the proper greasing, he says mechanically coach is excellent and in agreement that I can take to local RV center that will put on lift and go through a check as well as oil analysis.
He will also have Cummins engine, believes if it has not dropped the valve by now it is most likely not going to be an issue. They just replaced shocks 2 bags, 5 injectors, new tires and batteries (Wet ) and added all new furniture and solar 659 Watts
Was looking for 45' but believe the 42' is fine. Thanks again for all the great information IRV2 community is really fantastic!

Mark,
Are you saying that if this 2008 Magna never had the wet pto kit installed that the spline most likely is shot? owner was very service minded had local shop do his work says no issues he's aware of.
Does it make sense for me to add the pump kit as the coach has many miles on it now.
Thank you!!

I think in 08 they were required to install the wet kit. My 08 had the kit installed via a country coach recall according to paperwork and was installed at prevost in texas.
