2002 Monaco 40PKD

Looking at a 2002 Monaco Windsor Touring Edition, 40PKD. Almost every option in the book. Immaculate shape. I was show the basic's today and will go back for a more complete test of all systems. He said his set price is about $53,000 US and will not budge.

From three others I have looked at seems like a good deal.

He has spent about $14,000 in new upgrades to dish and electronics in last two years.

Any obvious issues with the 8 bag 8 shock system I need to look at?

This thing looks like just came of the show room floor and has been on one trip.

Has around 76,000 miles on it.

Has all the service records.

I will be checking back tomorrow AM and then not ill later as I have a container to get ready to fill.

Thanks in advance

Terry and Pat

I own a 2002 Windsor 38 PKD.

One benefit you get with the 40 PKD is higher CCC capacity, Monaco installed a higher rated rear axle in this coach.

No issues with the 8 air bag suspension or the chassis, it is pretty much bullet proof.

If it is as you describe the price is about right, I've seen similar coach for more and less but it depends on condition.

That being said I would suggest fluid samples on engine, transmission, and generator. Big ticket items that could cost $$$$ if they fail.

Tires also a big ticket item, check the date codes and if older you may be able to negotiate down as most recommend replacing at 7 years.

I would confirm that all appliances work. If the refrigerator has not been replaced it is probably due, mine finally failed last year.

Good luck

I have 02 Windsor bought it in 17 and love it. That's about right on the price if it's in really good condition. We paid 52000 for ours, bought it from private person who had owned it for last 10 years and kept it stored inside. He had done lots of upgrades flat screen tv's, replaced carpet in the bedroom, he had all other carpet and ceramic tile removed and real hickory hardwood floors installed professionally. They are solid built and drive like a dream. Check it out really close engine for leaks, tires for age, batteries for age, AC's, fridge, plumbing, water heater generator, inverter, check the floors for wood rot, go up on the roof and inspect, it will be one piece fiberglass, look for any damage. Drive it use the pac brake make sure it functions, gauges, service brakes, make sure transmission shifts correctly, check awnings, lights, check the leveling system, it will have either air or hydraulic leveling systems could be both. Run the slides in and out make sure they are aligned and functioning correctly. I'm sure I have missed something, but others will chime in maybe. If it checks out go for it you'll love it.

Good morning Terry & Pat; X2 on everything Jim has mentioned. I am on my second Windsor. The early Windsor's are great coaches in my opinion. A 2002 model year is the last year of the all steel semi-monocoque chassis. Built to last and heavy. As Jim mentioned the usual things as tires, batteries and fluid samples from all the expensive drive train stuff. Yes, make sure all systems work as they should. In my opinion, I don't think that is a bad price for the Windsor. To me, good, well taken care of Monaco coaches of that era are getting harder to find. My 01 Windsor just hit 70K on the odometer. If all checks out, I would go ahead an purchase the coach. If this is in your own backyard, you might have to travel quite a ways to find the next one and who knows what it will look like when you get there. I would take that into consideration in making a decision on this 2002. Best of luck on your decision! Don't forget this is one of the best places to come get info on your Windsor, if that is the route you take. Ask questions and someone will surely have some answers.

Jim gave very good advice. In addition to tire dates, I'd also check battery dates and the bottom of the slideouts on the outside for wood rot.
Remember, tires do not wear out on these coaches, they age out around 7 years.

NADA Bluebook shows this coach has a low retail of $30,150 and average retail of $36,300. I think he may be a little high on his price but Windsor's are very popular and often command higher than bluebook pricing.
I would also perform nationwide search's on RVT.com and RVTrader.com for Windsor's plus or minus 2 years and then rank order by price, lowest first. This will give you a better feel for pricing.
Best of luck!

Thanks everyone. We did purchase it today. We have done all the checks we could and no apparent leaks anywhere. He is going to safety it but refuses to deal with the outdated tires. Will deal with that my self. He has said any other issues he will deal with on a case by case issue. After seeing his place I believe him. Very well kept.
The coach if I had to rate it would be a 9.5 out of 10. Unbelievable.
Also traded my 2001 F 250 7.3 LT. diesel to him.
Went for a test drive and all I can say is wow. My truck rides way rougher than the coach.
I pick it up once we close on the house on Sept 19th.
Anyone need a 1996 Bounder ?

I am joining the Monaco Clan and feel good about it.

We picked up our Monaco on Wednesday and finished moving out of the house on Wednesday. One very busy day. Also sold two vehicles and are now down to two, one apiece, coincidentally the same number on MH’s we own😁😁.
Will post another post on our first impressions.

First impressions , 2002 Monaco Windsor

Drove it about a 100 miles back from pickup point. The quiet ness is hard to describe except to those that have a DP.
Wife loves that is no center dog house to crawl over to get to her seat.
The ability to get up to speed without hearing the motor is very nice also, the Allison 6 speed is a dream.
Side winds, we had about a 20 mph side wind in places, where barely noticeable.

Smoothness of ride, was as I had been led to believe, smooth.

Ride would be like comparing a 2000 Cavalier to a 2011 Buick Enclave. I have had both so that was my comparison.

Going from a 36 ft gas coach, with a tag axle, to a almost 41 ft Diesel was not noticeable in driving. The better wheel cut allows some rather sharp turns, which I did not have before.

Backing into my sisters driveway which is 20 feet wide off a rural gravel road was accomplished with two moves. Had to go another 10 feet further forward. Just missed both posts in the tail swing. Camera works real good. Thanks to one of our fellow posters for the pull ahead 10 ft further than you think and you will be in the right place.

Thanks to Joe and Annette for all the PM we exchanged.

Everyone else has been a wealth of information. Thanks to everyone here. You are all great.

Looks like a very nice coach, congratulations.

You've got you homework cut out for you, getting up to speed on all the bells and whistles. Hopefully you also got all the manuals and the data sheet which is a list of all the main build components. This will come in handy if you need to fix or replace anything. Over the years I've built an extensive library of manuals and information on my coach, comes in handy if you need to fix something.

Good Luck

Jim J ,
There is box with what looks like every manual for every component in the coach. I have looked thru them briefly but had to drive back to our work location and other MH to allow my wife to finish working 8 more shifts nursing.
