2006 400 ISL Failed Emissions

I get a puff of black smoke when I accelerate from a stop and sometimes on the highway. Went for an emission test and it would not pass the SNAP test, emissions too high. New Air Filter, Fuel Filters... has good boost, only 44k miles. Brought it to a shop and they suspect that it may need injectors. On Monday they are going to run some diagnostics to see what they can learn. Not burning oil. Plenty of power but milage is down. Does anyone have any ideas before I try the injectors? Just thinking outside the box, do you think it could need a reflash on the computer?

IMO, the fact that your mileage is down points to the injectors or some other cause of an overly rich mixture. Your year engine does have some type of EGR and that could account for blowing of black soot, but would not account for lower mileage unless you also had a performance decline due to exhaust obstruction. Further, the times it blows the smoke, acceleration and sometimes on the highway, points to an injector as well.

I'm not educated enough on that year/size engine to know if you have a Diesel Particle Filter and regeneration requirements. If so, that could also be a factor since regeneration uses fuel.

California does not require a smog test if your vehicle exceeds 14000 lbs.

Mass has an exemption for diesel vehicles made before 2007 with a GVWR above 10K lbs.

Actually, Trucks and Buses with diesel engines" over 14,000 do require a smog test. https://ww3.arb.ca.gov/msprog/onrdie...s/fsregsum.pdf

This guy posted he had to get emission test for his Coach in CA. need-help-with-a-cal-emissions-sticker-496294.html

I know the commercial trucks are being denied to renew their Registration if the truck "engine" is older than 1995. Engines newer than 1995 must add/have a particulate filter, and finally the remaining older engines must meet 2010 emission levels per the schedule shown below.

Can you explain why your 2006 coach would not meet the requirements for an exemption as described on the MA dmv.gov website?

That regulation is for commercial vehicles only. Private motorhomes are exempt from this regulation in Ca. That link is to a thread from someone who has a gas powered motorhome. We are referencing diesel engines.

I'm not arguing the point - because I don't know the answer.

But it reads like all Trucks and Buses are included. It says "Individual", but that could mean a commercial truck owned by an individual (owner-operator).

I did not see anything stating "commercial only" (maybe I didn't read enough).

Thanks
