2007 Monaco Signature Commander - Relay sound during ignition-On sequence

I really didn't know how to classify this issue with my coach, but the following is my attempt.

We have a 2007 Signature Commander - 45 with the Cummins ISX 600, and the issue is that typically when I turn on the ignition (not starting), the instruments on the dash cycle (the instrument dial needles go through a full sweep) and of course all of the trouble lights illuminate.

At this time there is a clicking sound that comes from several parts of the chassis that sounds like relays cycling. After about a few seconds the sound stops.

Where the issue started is when I took my coach to my local repair shop to get some work done.

When I picked it up, I immediately noticed that the cycling I mentioned earlier did not occur, and so I mentioned it to the service manager and he didn't know what I was talking about. Needless to say, I told him that whatever it was doing before, its not doing it now, and if something had gone wrong while in their possession they'll have to fix it,,, but right now I don't know what to tell them what the problem is.

I've tried to get some info from REV (the new owners of Monaco) and they can't give me any clear answers on what is the sound that I'm hearing.

I have a friend that has a 2008 HR Navigator with the Cummins ISX 605 and his does indeed go through the same cycling sequence that I mentioned earlier, and he was kind enough to take a video whereby you can hear the relays cycling. I have attached a video to this file including a picture of our coach.

If anybody out there can bring some clarity to this situation I's appreciate it.

This a pure SWAG but what you might have heard the first time was the heating grid solenoids engaging. This happens when it is cooler out. There is also (at least on my rig) a fuel transfer pump that runs for ~30 seconds when you turn the key. At that point, on my rig, the Wait to Start light goes out.



If you are not a member of the Cummins Quickservce site I'd suggest you create and account and then put in the SN of your engine. Lots of good info there. On mine I can see the electrical schematic for the ECM and what is controlled. This might give you a hint of what is happening at startup.

Thanks for the insight, I definitely will sign up with Cummins,,, but I think it has to do with the chassis some how, because it did it every time I went to start the coach, whether its hot or cold outside... but thanks for the input anyhow and appreciate your suggestions.

Your rig has many more electrical circuits then mine so no doubt you are hearing stuff happening.

Better to find out what is normal then to guess. Hopefully someone with the same vintage coach will speak up.

Mine does it also. I thought it was shuttle valves for the anti lock brakes or Automatic Traction Control but I am not sure.

It has nothing to do with the engine.

Start by checking the chassis batteries and connections.
Many RV service shops do not plug these coaches in and systems drain the batteries.
Also check the 12v cutoff switch on the passenger console. Sometimes referred to as the "salesman" switch.

Our 2007 Nav with a Detroit does exactly what you described, turn the key, all instruments go through a complete cycle, lights come on and there is much clicking in the engine area. In fact i wait until it is has completed before starting the engine. The only time it doesn't do that is if I am doing something that has me cycling the key on and off numerous times doing some project, it seems after it cycles once and you don't wait very long to turn the key again it doesn't do it.

Bill, have you gone outside & listened to it? The clicking is also near each front wheel as it cycles through.

I am usually unhooking when I signal my wife to start it up, and what I have heard is predominately coming from the engine compartment, I will check next time for clicks in the front.

No video seen, just the photo.

Our 2008 goes through a real clickity clacking (technical jargon), and it takes a moment for the dash warning lights etc to settle down before I try to start it.

Some of the noise does not occur on subsequent starts if soon after turning off.

Lots of noises around the engine bay. Fuel being pumped for sure, grid heater relays for sure, and who knows what else.

Sure enough there is clicking at the front also, mostly at the back though. Interesting

It looks like I have two conversation threads going dealing with the same issue,,, the ABS system. Finding out the fault codes for the ABS Fault Light and identifying the ABS electronics supplier and identifying and understanding the source of the "Clicking" noise,,, which seems to be a result of the ABS system also.

Just recently I got some feedback from REV Tech support and they said that the clicking noise I've/we've been referring to is the ABS modulating valves activating on its startup cycle, which sounds plausible. But one thing for sure their done with me, because the last email from them was real curt, and short,,, like "don't call us anymore, the Monaco you know no longer exists and we're tired of giving you free information."

But the real issue is that I can't seem to find a service center that knows what their doing. So the real benefit of a forum like this is that we're all sharing information and experiences that we can use to educate whoever is going to finally do the work.

Once I find out what ABS unit I have, I'll get a hold of Tech Support of the supplier and get up to speed on the system, then find a service center that services that controller specifically.

And of course I'll let you folks know what I find.
