2008 Monaco Diplomat 40 PDQ

I tested a 2008 Monaco Diplomat 40 PDQ today.
The MH had nearly all options and drove very nice.
I have nothing to compare with as I have never driven a diesel pusher before.
400 Hp Cummins Engine, 8 Airbag Model
The rig was brand new orphan Monaco with 3rd party extended warranty.

Should I buy or pass? LOL

Dealer asking $163,000

Thanks in advance.

That is a pretty good discount. I paid $175 for my 2007, but I got the full factory warranty for what it was worth. After two years in it, it appears that the biggest thing that can go wrong is probably under $3,000. The engine and transmission are covered by the manufactures, so you have three years on those. We have been very happy with the chassis and how it rides. The coach has some quality issues, but I think all of the manufactures have those issues. They are cheap to fix, when you count in the $90k discount. I think you would be very happy with the coach.

Sounds like a great price, but how much are they giving you on your 09 Greyhawk 31SS, That could make that good deal turn not so hot.

I am not trading my current rig in. I am not upside down in it.

FlashG -welcome to iRV2 and hopefully the Monaco Forum! I think you should go for it if you like the floorplan. The engine is a proven engine on an RR8R chassis which does not have the problems that the 4 bag chassis tend to.

As Luke said-we feel all manufacturers tend to have QC issues - so expect some QC issues from any RV that you find. The great thing is -you have found this forum where you can get some great information from members who have already been there.

Good Luck with your decision!

FlashG - this sounds like an OK price to us and if we was looking for a new RV we would definitely be tempted by what you have been offered.

We own a 2007 Diplomat PAQ and we have had more than our fair share of defects, but as others have stated, the defects have been minor. We started off never having owned a motorhome before, and therefore all defects was looking to us as major disasters.

Today we are a lot wiser and we figure that we could have fixed surely 95% of the defects ourselves without to much trouble. I have to add that this is mainly down to all our friends at this IRV2 forum who are always ready to offer valuable advice.

Go through the Diplomat at the dealers and have them rectify any obvious faults. Then be prepared to make good a number of faults yourself for the next couple of years. Bottom line: You have got yourself a nice rig at a very nice price, and I doubt that you will be disappointed overall.

We hope to see you on the road in your new Dip

I just bought an Endeavor (Diplomats brother) in August, I got the dealer down to $159,500 and had them add a full length pull out slide tray and a Wingard SK-3005 HD satellite system, all in the price. I've been very happy with the unit, only a couple of minor items. I also got the extended warranty, I think it's a good idea. My dealer sold me the years 2 thru 5, and he paid for the 1st years coverage.

Hmmmm.........
Here's a new 09 for $169,800. You maybe could talk them down even a little more. Course, you'd have to take a trip to Cali and then do an out of state delivery in OR, but what the hey.

I'm not sure what the MH prices are doing in your area, but last summer Motor Home Specialists gave me 44 percent off on a new 42PAQ Cheetah. It looks as if the prices have gone back up since then at that dealership.

I was wondering if all diesel pushers accellerate the way this one does.

It does have power but not like any vehicle I have driven.

When you step on the accellerator you slowly steadily increase speed.

If you want to pass someone quickly - do you down shift?

Yep, they pretty much work just that way.
Remember, you are moving (trying to move) 32,000 lbs or so from a dead stop. Also trying to gain speed quickly is just not going to happen.
You build momentum in these things and try not to lose it. Requires lots of practice, and looking far ahead and behind to guesstimate what openings are going to be available for you to use. And forget downshifting. The tranny will not allow it unless you basically are lugging the engine.

If the Diplomat is what you want Mandy's Man left you the link to a good deal that can very possibly be even better. The link is DiMartini and they are in my opinion, the best to deal with and offer the best pricies and customer service. Call and speak with Tim DiMartini he will give you the best possible price.
