2009 Camelot rotten egg smell, looking for the source
We have a 2009 42' Camelot. There is a very distinctive rotten egg smell coming from somewhere near the rear of the coach. Here is what I know -
It is definitely not in the house area, its outside.
It is specifically in and around the engine bay.
All tanks are completely empty and flushed as they always are.
Everything looks dry and clean anywhere I can crawl around.
It's not propane.
I have read that the smell often comes from the water heater. However, most of the articles reference a propane water heater. We have AquaHot and electric(we use electric about 90% of the time).
So my questions - Could it be from the electric water heater? If so, where is it located? I couldn't find it anywhere.
If not the water heater, any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

In the Aqua Hot, the electric portion is in the Aqua Hot itself in the form of an element similar to an electric hot water heater.

Are you boiling your batteries which could cause the odor you are smelling. Look at the engine starting set, which are in the rear of your coach.

I just ran into that as well...I was out of propane and I believe it is the Ethyl Mercaptan they add to propane. I have ran into that as well in house when i get to 5-10%...just saying...just curious how you know it's not propane?

Check the fluid level in the batteries PRONTO!!
If they are dry they can explode.

It is a different smell than propane. Also, the propane bay has no smell emitting from it. It is in and around the engine bay and to my knowledge, there is no reason for propane to be back there. I could be wrong of course.

YEP^^^^^^
Batteries boiling off
Could be due to overcharging
Could be due to a shorted cell
Be careful////eye protection and have water hose available to wash yourself/area down
(Not for putting in the batteries....Distilled Water for that BUT for emergency wash should battery acid be present)

Dave, you were exactly right. That is the source. The coach is now unplugged. What is the safest way to deal with this? Are the batteries usually toast at this point?

Happened to me, converter went bad and over charged the batterys. One bat was toast over heated and swelled the sides. Got a new 4 stage converter and 2 new AGM bats.

I see only two batteries and they are for engine starting at least based on a quick glance.
Your house batteries of which there is likely four must be close by too.
If you have a Magnum inverter they can over charge when the battery temp monitor fails.
Find that and unplug it from the inverter if you suspect that.
Gassing batteries can be extremely dangerous as already mentioned so be sure you have safety goggles and water nearby. I have seen them explode and it is indeed very dangerous.

Yes, those are the chassis batteries and they are the issue. The four house batteries are right underneath on a separate tray. I have not refilled the water before so that is why I was asking how to safely do so.

I use a turkey baster. Distilled water only. Fill to 1/8 inch less than full.
Have the batteries tested for specific gravity. The techs at auto stores can guide you from there.
