40 and 45' turning radius and attack angles

We are getting ready to build a garage for our motorhome. Questions from the architect included the turning radius and angle of attack for driveway planning.

We currently have a 1994 Signature 40', but expect the next one to be a 45' tag axle.

Does any one know where we can find this information?

Paul

Keep in mind that the "older" RoadMasters do not have the same max. turn angle as the 50 degree shown in the above example.

If you have lots of room use it. You won't regret more room but you sure will regret less.

The minimum turning radius is a federal DOT guideline that buses and semi's need to follow, such as DOT min radius. Our current 40' RV has a outer turning radius of 40' and the inner radius is 28' without the toad.

The link shows an outer radius of 45'. I would try to keep the turns as gradual as possible to minimize tag tires scuffling and related tight turning wear. Some chassis allow tag axel lifting during turns.

The construction of the driveway is important too. We regraded ours to be stronger, using 12" of gravel base topped with 4" asphalt binder. The 3" top coat will be in a year or so. Basically we constructed a roadway for our driveway, based upon local asphalt plant suggestions. We also had a hill and drainage issues to work into the mix too. The RV sits on a pad with a 12" gravel base and 6" of high strength concrete. Our old standard residential driveway (4" base & 2" of asphalt) did well for our gas RVs (18K#) but did poorly under the weight of our parked DP (40k#).

I would drive past the garage then perform a 3-point turn behind the garage, drive back past the front of the garage, and back into the garage.
