400-450 Cummins in a Monaco a mystery ?
I just became the owner of a 1996 Sig. I won on Ebay and am sorting out just what I have. here is the question. It seems my Roadmaster Chassis was built in 95 the Coach ID shows its a 96,,so far so good . Now, it has the Cummins M11 engine and in 96 it was 400 hp,, thats what I thought I bought however instead I have the 450 hp M11 which was not even built untill 97. This has been confirmed by the Cummins branch shop,, they should know, and thats what I got. This is great, but , how can this be, a 97 engine in a 96 coach? It also has analog gauges and not what was a failed attempt at digital dash, yet,, there are still some digital readouts on the left side of dash. Was all this replaced by factory? other things , batteries are in 2 different places one engine 2 house in same side compartment yet....and with 2 group 31 starting bats. under the bed !My owners manual is a 97 the title shows 96, so does the Id on the body...
I really want to know what I actually have, maybe its a hybrid ? and there is no direct answer ? anyone with ideas , please respond with your thoughts.

Call Monaco Tech Support. They can call up the unit by its VIN and confirm what it left the factory with.

I took your advice and did receive a data sheet on my 96 Sig. however the "data card" did not disclose important features like third air cond. zone! .So far they have no answer to this. The big issue was the 450 M11 engine in my coach that left the factory in Oct. 95. The 450 engine did not come out until 97 and that info is directly from Cummins.! The data card shows a M11 400hp. I guess there was an engine swap early in the life of my coach ? So far no one knows the rest of the story, as far as know.

On the motor serial number tag are some codes other than the serial number that tell you all about the motor build. Write down all the numbers and call a Cummins shop and have them punch in the codes.

The M11 was first offered in '94. Between then and '98 when the ISM electronic version was introduced there were a couple of variations. The M11 Celect and the M11 Celect Plus. Those were early partial electronic engines. I'm not sure the dates of those changes but a Cummins distributor can plug your numbers in and give you a for sure answer.

Check your sheet carefully. On mine, the third AC is not listed with the other two but listed further down on the sheet. Very confusing.

Yes , I did look, no listing of 3rd AC.anywhere. Has 2 starting batteries under bed and 3 in rear basement. plus a safe. 2 Heart Inverters, and ofcoarse no listing of a 450 M11, but does state M11 400.

Cummans swears that my 450 M11 was built may 97 coach left factory Oct. 95. I keep racking my brain and the only answer I can see is the Coach was "updated" in the first two years of its life with third AC and new 450 M11....very strange this would not have been an easy upgrade never mind the cost factor.

That number off the motor is what it is. Cummins will not make a mistake on that

Is it possible that the original engine suffered a total blow up and was replaced later? If you have the s/n info on the original engine perhaps Cummins can help.

Get someone with the Cummins INSITE program hook up to your ECM and it will tell you the exact date the engine was manufactured and where it came from.

Thats what I am beginning to think . The old engine ser no. does not show up on the data card. only the numbers 102. I asked the info center for Navastar, which I think is outsourced anyway for more stuff, so far no reply. They are in Lisle Ill. a Chicago burb. Funny thing I used to live in Lisle 30 years ago now....
Cummins Guys are great, they have had the coach inside a bay for almost 2 weeks fixing small things, gen won't run, aqua hot won't start, fan belts replaced, some hoses on engine...the bill is only about 400.00. I need 2 air bags as they have pin holes, they want 800.00 for that and 2 week order time. I will bring it back for that later this month. One mishap, they wedged mattress under halogen lights, of coarse it caught on fire took 4 guys to get the smoldering mess out on the floor where they stuck a hose into the big hole. Needless to say, they ordered a new mattress, memory foam ,at their expence. I feel I am lucky to have such total repair service with NPower Cummins branch in so remote a place as we are in, the UP of Michigan,., They are new but real nice people.and prices are very reasonable. I will ask them again if they can axcess old records on the engine, but, 102 is not much to go with.
