Problem Found

Went to the authorized cummins diesel center and they told me it wasn't babbit it was aluminium from the compressor and wanted $1500.00 to strip the compressor. I asked for a used main bearing and they gave me one. I heated the bearing up and peeled the babbit off and it looked exactly like what i had found. A magnet would not pick it up.

So we dropped all the mains and rods and i found that the thrust bearing had 1/3 of the lower half of the main bearing completely gone. the 1/3 was at the edge of the bearing not under direct load so the crankshaft was fine and merryily just running fine. The original bearing looked like it was defective. no excessvie heat or wiping. Just absent material.

Off an running. Now i am chasing codes 364 and 391 low voltage a fuel supply relay and communication error vp44 with ECM. Will put a seperate post on about that one!!!

Did you roll in new main bearings or just put it back together? Just curious.
