8.3 - 330 HP, 6 speed Allison, what fluids are acceptable and how much does the trans hold. How often do you change it (miles) I found 3 different types in a old manual AT-542, MD-3060 and Dexcon III, any suggestions? I have put approx. 10,000 miles on the MH since I got it but unsure when it was changed if ever, now has 63,000 on it.

I would flush and fill with any of these allison approved TES295 fluids

The following is additional information for this fluid group

Transmission fluid does not need to be changed with every filter change; however, when replacing filters you may lose about 10 quarts of fluid during the filter change and will need to refill the transmission to the proper level after the filter change is complete.

When using Allison Lube spec TES 295 fluid, change intervals should be as follows:

Fluid 150,000 miles / 6,000 hours / 48 months; whichever comes first
Main Filter 75,000 miles / 3,000 hours / 36 months; whichever comes first
Lube/Auxiliary Filter 75,000 miles / 3,000 hours / 36 months; whichever comes first
Internal Filter Changed only during transmission overhauls
Initial 10,000 mile change Not required with TES 295 fluids


Also note that effective January 2010, per Allison Service Tip 1099N, Allison no longer authorizes the use of DEXRON® III or IV in any of its transmissions.

Your 3060 trans will take 19 qts with the filter change and filter #29548988, before I would Change the fluid I would have it tested and there is a Allison thread on the IRV2 forum with good info from a ex Allison transmission engineer. Go to this web site and read about the test and what you need to get a sample.

As far as fluid you can still use Dexron lll if you can find it but the synthetic Allison fluid is a better fluid and will last longer especially when you test your fluid and change when needed by test information and not by time. You will probably need to change your filters after the test but let them advise you it will also take from 3 to 4 qts of fluid to top off after the filter change.
