AC Bypass Louver - Open or Closed?
Do guys operate the roof ac units with the bypass louver on the bottom of the units open or closed? If open they make a lot more noise but seem to cool better.

Can you explain.
I thought they only recirculated
Ours are fairly noisy
They don't bother me at all cause I'm old and deaf. But DW is young and spritely, and she gives me curry about the noise they make.
Any advice on quiet ending them would be much appreciated.

Open for initial cooling. The coach will cool faster. When close to comfortable, I close it to send air to the small registers to promote an even coach temp.

The bypass dumps the air in the immediate vicinity of the unit and serves as a spot cooling aid. Use it for quick cooling the area and then close it.

opening bypass dumps and using a box fan setting up on dash blowing rearward make for the fastest cool downs..and will be evenly distributed back to the kitchen.
Mine didnt have the dumps from the factory but I made my own. Ducted AC took forever to cool down as compared to my old TT with only 1 ac(that had the dump)

Ken, This makes sense to me. I feel like there is not enough air flow through the ducts alone for maximum cooling. The bypass gets the most out of the units. I removed one duct louver, thinking they may be obstructing flow through the ducts and would need to be cut down (as others have done) but mine are very short and do not obstruct the flow. May remove the bottom cover on the units to make sure there are no obstructions at that location. Otherwise, I guess there doing the best they can.

Willie, my frt AC ducting had the outlet of the AC unit 1/3 blocked..they didn't cut the hole in the inlet of the ductwork to proper size...my rear was cut properly. Do not ever under estimate the lack of work ethics used in building these things.

There is no way to make these quieter unless you build a box over the outlet and redirect the sound. The duct systems are very resistive and you may find if you drop one of the little registers out that they may be too long . Reading the above thread I found one suggestion that is very helpful. Our AC has low fan, high fan, and auto. On auto the fan shuts down completely when the AC cycles. Leaving it on high versus auto is noisy but really helps for overall cooling. When the compressor shuts off the remaining cool is not wasted by an inactive fan.

Bruce I did the same as you had done with the outside unit and made much difference!....I will add....get rid of dark or black colored outer AC covers....they attract heat!

We have found in high humidity conditions, running the a/c with the dump closed will cause the evaporator to accumulate ice and drip onto the floor. If I leave the dump open, it never ices.
