Roy you can't distinguish between Transynd and non Transynd by color taste or smell. The oil test labs can't either. They should have put a dye into Transynd so one can identify it

Be very aware of ATF products that say they are TES-295 approved for Allison transmissions. Use only TES-295 fluids that have been tested and certified by Allison. Allision publishes a list of these approved fluids and believe it or not Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF or Amsoil ATF is NOT approved.

Also, according to Allison never use Dexron fluid in the transmission. It is not compatible with the seals in the transmission.
At some point, I think it was with the introduction of the latest filters, Allison removed the first 5000 mile filter change.

OK I checked and there is a tag on the dip stick that says it has Allison Transynd fluid already.
Can I get by with just changing the filters? The moho only has 40,000 miles on it.If so,how much fluid will I need?

Yes, just change the filters but you will need maybe a gallon of Transynd to replace what will come out when you change the filteres. I found out that if I parked the MH on a slope so that the front was higher than the back you loose way less fluid during the filter change. Catch the fluid and measure how much comes out so you can put the same amount of fresh fluid back in. You will also need a torque wrench to tighten up the bolts on the filter panel. Don't try and guess if they are tight enough. If you strip one you are really opening up a can of worms. If you dont have a torque wrench then most chain auto supply shops will loan you one free.

You may want to check the type of oil you have, Castrol Transynd oil is the recommended oil now. This is always hard to find at a good price. The last time I bought some over the counter it was at a Clark Service for OTR trucks. I've also ordered from places via the internet but there are not many listed now. Here is one
Transynd Synthetic Fluid | DMAX Store

I've changed my oil once and then ~3 years later did a filter change. The first time I checked with the nearest Allison service center and they wanted +~$600, YIKES.

It's not hard, the filters are accessed via 2 cover plates, just make sure you keep everything clean and when you go back be careful with the bolts so you don't cross thread and check the torque requirements.

If you drain all the oil out it may take ~6-7 gallons, changing just the filters takes less, last time I changed the filters I only drained 1 gallon out.

You should be able to check your transmission oil level using the touch pad, pressing both the up & down arrows. Make sure your level is good before you start or note if it is low. Catch all the oil you drain out and put this much back in (unless it showed you were low) and then ~1 quart for the oil trapped in the filters.

Good Luck

Why would you only change the filters, like brushing your teeth with no toothpaste

Mike,
I suspected that. I am going to call the dealer (D'Martrini, Grass Valley CA) that did the oil change to see if I can find out what they use. Of course, that was 5 years ago and people may have changed. The tag on the dip stick tube says Transynd but that is no guarantee. If I can't find out, I may just go ahead and change it to be on the safe side.
Thx for the input on that.

Roy

Probably used 2106 red synthetic all the time so now he uses ELC 'cause it's red too.

Funny you would think he would use the Blue stuff.

Chuckster52, I know WW Williams (not CW) well and in Atlanta they told me that with the new type filters and 100% Transynd that normal use fluid change was at 300,000 miles and Severe duty was 150,000 miles and filter change was at 75,000 miles which is backed up on Page 9 of the attached Allison document below. I also know they say to change it every four years but doing an oil analysis at that time will be sufficient. If you want to change yours at 75,000 miles or every four years then that is your choice but I believe a waste of money. My Signature is 11 years old and the fluid was sent to a lab and checked by WW Williams before I bought it and I checked it a year ago at Blackstone Labs and it is still good to go.

Roy, a dealer such as D'Martini that has been working on Monacos for a long time would know that the MH came with Transynd and would have also seen the label on the dipstick tube and used Transynd.

Mike you are probably right. Think I will call them anyway just to see what they say.

Thanks Roy for your 26 years of service!

Just reading and learning but thought I'd make mention. No, I didn't.

I don't know if it's still true, but I know up to a couple of years ago, Transynd would turn a light brownish orange color after a year or so. Something about the dye they used breaking down. I wasted an entire trans full of Transynd when mine started getting discolored. After I changed my fluid back to Dex III, I found out the discoloration was normal, nothing to worry about. Oh well, it's only money....

Probably because that's what Allison recommends in their published literature.
