I use three 4x4s screwed to 2x6s and they are holding up. When I used 2x12s the boards split as they dried out. I secured a short rope to mine to help pull them out.

Used marine grade plywood. Laminated 3 - 3/4 pieces 12" x 12". Strong, fairly light and resistant to moisture.

Build them to fit a convenient compartment.

A good enhancement to the laminated 3/4 plywood is to drill a couple holes through the face intersecting with holes drilled in from the edge, then tie a loop of rope so the knots are captured in these holes. This makes it easy to retreive the pads with an awning hook, and also to carry several of them at the same time. I made mine up out of 2 - 3/4 x 12 x12 pieces of treated CDX plywood glued together with polyurethane glue (like Gorilla glue). These have held up real well. One sheet of plywood will yield 16 two layer pads so two people can each get 8 out of a sheet.

Help me understand why you need blocks ?

I can envision if a site is WAY out of kilter, but wouldn't that make issues with lot's of twisting, etc on your coach ?

I have air leveling but I think the pads are only to keep the jack foot from sinking into the ground if its too soft?

Leveling jack on any rig only extend so far. By using blocking, you limit the extension allowing enough to level the frame in more situations.

In addition, the shorter the jacks, the more stable the entire unit will be.

True! I also have air leveling now, but never had issues with leveler reach on coaches with them. I could get all tires off the ground, which is not advised.
For me, blocks prevented my jack pads from diving into soft ground. Some ground that seems very hard can turn to mush in a rain.

HR manual recommends 12x12x1.5 in the manual. HOWEVER, please consider three variables; weight, ground condition and site level.
The CG was grass sites and had flooded the day before our arrival so I picked the dryest spot I could. The MH did not make tire tracks so I thought we were good. For good measure I placed a 2X12x36 under each rear jack but I did not have a third. I put the next biggest pad I had (1.5x14x14) under the front/single jack. The next morning we were out of level. My front jack pushed my 14x14x2 pad into the ground that was firm enough to hold my 40,000lbs (spread across 3 axles). The pad did not sink evenly so it got trashed and "tacoed" my jack's metal pad.
