Awning issue
My 2007 38 Carmen power awning failed to retract. It would try but stop. I manually assisted it and when it got half way it finished retracting by its self? It's either the motor or weak battery. Battery on elms shows charged 13.5. I haven't check the coach batteries with volt meter that will be next. The first time it failed it was strange when pushed the retract button it would start then stop and then the steps would go in and out? That has since stopped but awning very weak. The awning has always been very slow.
Any thoughts?

Our awning has a connector on the side of the coach that provides power to the awning. It is a quick connect type.
Check you owners manual and see if your awing has one of these.
Over time it will get corroded. Try unplugging it and reattaching. If this helps take it apart and clean and put some dielectric grease on it.

Is it a Carefree with a switch under the support arm that operates the awning? If so, it could be the motor D-shaft rounded out the D-hole in the awning end cap. This is a very common problem with the Carefree and I just fixed a friends last week. The bad thing is that is the only thing keeping the awning from unfurling.

Clean the connector!!!!! Same problem with my unit. You can test the motor by attaching a battery to the test points located above the motor. When I attached my Jump Box it would scoot it but would barely move when pressing the buttons.
I will add that this is an ongoing problem once the corrosion sets in. The ultimate solution is to hard wire the motor (bypass the plug).
Good Luck

I have the same problem with mine. I tried lubing the arms, cleaning connections and everything in between. Finally took it in and had shop check it. It's a weak motor and every time it starts to retract awning it overheats motor and stops. They have ordered a replacement motor from Dometic and lucky for me my extended warranty is covering the cost.

What's the best method to clean the connector. Is there a solution you can spray on it after brushing connection?

The connector is not very robust. Radio Shack has a spray cleaning solution with a dialetric built in.
Good temporary fix.
Good Luck

Awning
Wow! Could not believe the timing on this! We just returned from a road trip and spent 12 hours waiting for a mobile RV repair guy to help role my awning so we could get back on the road.
Noticed the awning was out just a couple of inches when driving down the interstate. Pulled in to a rest stop to retract the awning but no luck. When I tried to extend the awning, it "fell" open. Tried to retract....the motor runs, the awning moves very little, then nothing, just the motor running. Rolled the awning by hand and tied it back. It is a Carefree awning.
Going to look at it tommorow but not sure which connectors I am looking for. By the way, my steps went out at the same time. In fact, the step motor would run, even when turned off but the steps do not move. Had to tie them back as well.
Thoughts??

Awning Followup
Thanks for the info. I started to take the plastic housing off the motor.....removed the screws but noticed what appears to be two rivets attaching the left side of the plastic housing. Does anyone know if the rivets are original or is it possible the rivets were added by the previous owner. Suggestions for removing the rivets would be welcome. Thanks in advance.
Note: Appears the housing was opened before - missing one screw and the seams were caulked.

Sorry, cant help ya. I never seen the working end of mine. Mine blew out while traveling this winter, in high head/ cross winds. Mine was jammed up so bad, my only option was to climb up on the roof with a utility knife, and pray I did'nt get blown off the roof before I could cut the fabric off.
Put in an insurance claim, and they just replaced the whole awning, arms, motor and all.
I've read thread(s) on this forum, of people removing the cover, and drilling a hole thru the motor/ awning shaft, and pinning it with a small cotter pin or bolt. May be an option for you.

The rivets on mine are simply battery (or power source) connection points to bypass the switch and check the motor.

Awning Repair Continues
Removed the housing over the motor and the motor works fine. Looking at the pics from Post 3, I believe I have the same problem. Plan on taking the housing apart tomorrow but I am concerned about the awning falling. Need advice on securing the awning for this repair. Thanks in advance for any help!
