Beaver Patriot Thunder
Hi Folks,
I'm new to the group, and I just purchased a gently used 2004 Beaver Patriot Thunder. I have never had a Class A diesel pusher before, although I am not new to the RV lifestyle.
I will have lots of questions I am sure, but today it is about wheel bearings. The rig has 8 wheels (tag axel), but I am not sure if all 8 need wheel bearings to be packed. How could I tell if they need it. Original owner is not available, and no records of the wheel bearings in the maintenance log. Does anyone know about this? Thanks in advance.

Do a search for Anbocat on irv2.com.
He also has a 2004 Beaver Patriot.

Only your steer axle 'may' have grease lubed bearings.
Your drive axle bearings get their lubrication from the oil in the differential.
Your tag axle has oil filled hubs, which needs to be changed out occasionally.
My reason for saying 'may' for your steer axle is many owners get oil filled hubs installed on the steer axle.

Oil bath bearings have a plastic viewing window in the center of the hub, with a rubber cap in the center. The window will have a line that will show where the oil level should be when stopped on level ground. If you check them right after stopping, it takes a couple minutes for the oil to settle to get a correct reading.
If you have them it's important to check them regularly for the proper oil level and to see if any moisture has entered the oil and turned it milky. If water is getting in, oil could be leaking out and you may not notice the leak if its the inner seal. When this seal leaks it drips oil on the inner part of the tire and can leak oil on the brakes too. If you notice you need to add oil, look at the backside of your tires. Drips can look like radial lines on the tire surface. Sometimes they leak when moving, sometimes when stationary. A small leak might not leave a puddle on the ground.
The cap also has a drain cap and the hubs commonly use gear oil.

As said, only wheel bearings that are grease filled are "packed". If you have that style (my 2005 does) those would be on the front axle only. The Drive axle and Tag axle are oil filled.
Personally, I prefer the grease style - and would not change over to oil bath style.
You should periodically (every year or two) jack up the front wheels and spin/rock them looking for looseness and noise. If they spin fine, then just remove the "grease cap" and see if the grease is clean. Any signs of water or dirt in the cap/grease would then warrant disassembly, cleaning and inspection.
This is a "grease cap" (top photo) and an Oil bath style (bottom photo).
