Bedroom slide out shear pin

Does anyone know how to disassemble this gear box so I can replace a shear pin? It's an HWH unit. I'm trying to figure out the model so I can down load the service manual for it. Any help? Please see pictures. Then I have to figure out why the pin broke...

Hello, Interesting I fixed mine about a month ago for second time in 19 years, it been 17 years since last time.

Youre on the right track as to the way I did it.

1. I took all the screws and lag bolts from the head of the bed platform, off the outer wall of slide and the foot of the bed.

2. Un plugged the motor Top side right wall easy plug to a PCB.

3. Removed the four Nuts and bolts (See Pic) You 'Might need to remove the lower bracket that i circled also for room and it will give you a better angle of attack to remove broken pin

4. After all loose you can lift up and turn over the rail, if the cog turns easy or has already slipped to the side you'll need to line up the holes in cog and shaft, and I used a drift pin and hard plastic mallet to remove the parts of broken pin, If it hasn't you can use the mallet to move it over and then clear the hole in the shaft first then slide cog till the holes should allign and used drift pin and mallet (trial and error ) thats how I did mine, take the broken pin with you to compare,

5. Then went to lowes and Bought two replacement Rolled spring pins and lined up and tapped it in. I believe I got the 1 inch pin and it was correct lenghth.


6. Because the mechanisn may not line up with holes in braket when you turn back over I replugged motor and had wife tap switch back and forth to allign.

7. Re-installed all the nuts bolts and stuff plugged in and tested


I ASSUMED mine broke because the Pin over the years worked its way out until it caught, as it turned, on the bolts below the rail.. Good luck if I can help at all let me know.

I know the feeling, my Wife discovered the night before we were to leave to meet fellow campers. The second time it was better than first. Git done around midnight with disassembly got up right after Lowes opened had had everything back together in under two hours. Good luck.

Well I got it apart the hard way. I didn't realize the board at the head of the bed was on a hinge until I had half the screws out in that small space. No hardware store big or small has any shear pins So I have to order 25 on Amazon. So I will have a lot of spares.

Might be too late for ya but auto parts stores carry them usually. My first time was in Moab..

I assumed you knew about hinged bed deck, ooops

I have checked with four different auto parts stores including Napa, and RV shops. It's amazing how many people don't even know what a shear pin is...

Because it shouldn't be a shear pin. It should be a roll pin.

It should be a Shear Pin. The shear pin is made to brake at a given load to protect the gears.

Oh, I was just going by the one I found broke when I got mine apart.

Single layer spring pins or stronger multiple roll pins do act like shear pins and used as such. True shear pin or bolts are more closely engineered for a breaking strength and where to be cut down and to shear at for less or no damage to protected parts.
I would mark position where holes line up at and gear position on shaft to make easier for hopefully NOT next time. This saves me much time with roll shear pins at work, to line up and knock out old and in new ones. Prevents dinging up shaft in wrong position. A heavy coat of paint on shaft on sides of gear can help keep it in position on shaft. As well show you if it walked. There are special coating for this but not necessary in this case.

Yep, I'm just replacing it with same type of pin that broke.

The shear pins showed up today and I finished the repair. Runs nice and smooth. Now I have two grease spots to clean up in the carpet.
