Black Tank Valve replacement

Question, is it as simple as taking the 4 bolts loose and replacing with new valve? Mine is getting real hard to open and close and I'm concerned it's going quit working when tank is full.

Once the bolts are out is it hard slip old out and new valve back in place?

Hope to tackle this project today.

Sort of. There are two gaskets, one on each side of the blade. Typically this means you need to gain some clearence to slip the blade and seals out and get them back in. When replacing the bolts you need to be extremely careful to tighten them a little at a time. Even a bit of mis alignment will cause a leak. Be sure to liberally grease the blade and seals with plumbera grease.

Pretty much. Do make sure to use new stainless hardware. I sprayed the rubber parts with silicone. I've read where some people stuff the case with grease, I can't speak to the benefits or downsides of doing that.

Replacing before it breaks is definitely a good plan. I also did that, along with the grey valve.

One issue you could have is if the the pipes don't line up right. You will have to pry or ?? accordingly.

Have fun!

Donn, that's what I'm afraid of that I won't be able to get enough clearance to slip the valve and seals out and back in. Did you leave the seals on the valve when you inserted it into position or did the seals get put on the fixed pipes first and then insert the valve?

Thanks Steve. My concern is how much clearance I'll have to insert new valve. Guess I'll start by loosening the bolts and see how much clearance I get.

Bought of a bottle of Thetford's drain valve lubricant to put in tanks every now and then. Anyone used this and did you notice any results or is it just a waste of money?

I think over this summer I am going to install electric dump valves in place of the cable pull.

There is a hack on youtube for lubing the valves. Basically drill a small hole at the top, squirt lube in, seal with a screw the same size as the hole. Just search youtube.
