Update.
On the recommendation of a couple of Cummins service managers I replaced the fuel filter as it was past due. While there I also looked closely at the lift pump for leaks. No runs no drips just what would look like typical oily deposits as with the rest of the underside of the engine. I did put a wrench to the three bolts mentioned in other threads just to be sure they were tight. Maybe got a 1/8 turn on a couple. Also while I had the time hosed off the radiator as it was so caked in whatever that you couldn't see through it. Took for a 100 mile round trip drive up and down some hills here south of Nashville on 24 to Manchester and back and no problems. No hesitations definitely no smoke of any kind.
So hoping all is now good for our trip next week.
Some had mentioned valve stems, guides and what not. If I were seeing smoke all the time, yes I would be concerned about that possibility but as it has only occurred twice I am not going there yet.
Thanks for your response and tips.
Keep them coming.
