Brake Shoe Thickness - 2001 Monaco Dynasty.

I have a 2001 Monaco Dynasty King 40 footer and was looking at the brake shoes while draining the air tanks.

It was a surprise to see that the shoes were completely visible and not behind a metal plate like in a car.

From what I could see they looked very good and there is about 1/2 inch of shoe material. The drums look pretty good too.

What I don't know is how thick the baking material is new so don't have anything to go on. I would like to have some idea where I am with regard to the overall life remaining. Can anyone out there shed some light on this?

Thanks

You don't have anything to worry about I have a friend with close to 200000 th miles on it and his are still in good shape, if you are getting water out of your air tanks I would suspect that your coalescing air filter needs changing.

Some chassis manufactures will install a backing plate and some do not. The brake block wear will vary with use and driving style. Two things to keep and eye out for are cracks in the block material and rust jacking. Rust jacking is where road chemicals cause rust to form between the brake table and the brake block thus forcing the block away from the table.

I am not sure what Walt was referring to about the water in the air lines, that has nothing to do with the brake wear. It however is a good thing to drain the air tanks every couple of months and service the air drier on a regular interval.

Everything looks good and absolutely no water is coming out of my tanks so things seem to be fine.

I didn't realize that these brakes lasted so long....

Thanks

The industry standard is to replace the brake shoes when they are down to 1/4" of linning left on an air brake system. Sometimes the brake shoe has a wear indicator on them that lets you know when it time to replace them.

Where can you buy brake parts for a 2001 monaco knight?

You can purchase air brake parts from most any truck parts supply or dealership. I purchase mine from the local Navistar truck dealer.
