Thanks again to everyone who posted. Bob, you are a wealth of valuable information. Thank you for keeping up with the post. The Link you sent has convinced me that the drums need to be replace. Vander Haags has them for $117.00 each plus shipping. They can be sourced locally for at O'reilly's for $205 each. Monday will check with Utility Trailer. Here are a couple more pics. DW decided I needed help removing the tire. (She loosened 5 of the lugs) but couldn't pick up the drum. Thickness of pads to top of rivets. They definitely need replacing. Glad we decided to pull things apart. God Bless to all.

Hahahahaha, Oreilley's quoted me the wrong drum. Now it's $267.99 plus shipping. Looks like shipping from any other vendor is going to be $300.00 or more. Need to call around to the trucking places on Monday. They are all closed down here on the weekends.

Make sure your S cam bushings don’t need replacing as long as you’re in there!

Bob, was able to figure the steps out with help from Harry. The gear assembly in the motor was shot. The 3 spacers had turned to dust and the large plastic gear was worn. Ordered replacement parts on amazon. Hopefully all the switches are good, will find out when its back together. Parts will take about a week to get here. Pray you had an awesome weekend. Will be checking out drums, shoes and roller kits at Utility Trailer tomorrow. God Bless,
Ed

I'm glad it's working for you and it sounds like you made the right call on the shoes and taking it apart. It's great to know, for a fact, you're not wasting your time. Also great that Harry got you squared away on the steps!

With respect to the drums, I also saw another document, two now, that both said you can hit them with 80 grit emery cloth to correct the
polished condition. The one document, can't seem to find it, also stated that those heat checks apparently move around and get created/recreated as the drum heats and cools.

What I'm getting at is, if you find that the drums are quite pricey and the heat checking, which is normal, is not that bad, I personally would have no issue with hitting it with emery cloth if it were my vehicle and doing the clean, lube, adjust reshoe route.

Bear in mind, your pac brake now works. For the lawyers out there...

Heat checking is a normal condition and will not affect braking performance. However, the brake drum should be replaced if heavy heat checking is encountered and any of the following conditions occur:
One or more heat check cracks extend continuously over 75% of the braking surface in the axial direction.
One or more heat check cracks are over 0.060 inch wide and/or over 0.060 inch deep. If heavy heat checking is localized on only one side of the drum, then the drum should be replaced. Heavy heat checking on one side of the drum is typically caused by improper drum mounting or a drum that is out of round.

You don't need to gold plate it, you just need to be comfortable with your repair and that it's safe

Just food for thought...

Bob, thank you for all your suggestions. Went to Utility Trailer this morning and scored what was needed. This is a list of parts and the part numbers. Took one of the old shoes in with me and the counter guys knew what was needed immediately. 1. American made drums WE56864B $104.88 each. 2. New Shoes not remans HV884709ES2J. $59.50 each set. Lug Nut 13-3052 $4.50 each. The shoes included new springs and roller sets. Total cost to have new rear brakes $360.75 including tax. The drums are Webb and the shoes are Haldex. Both are quality items. I would say that is a bargain for peace of mind. Hope this thread helps those who are thinking of a brake job. Check out Utility Trailer for brake parts. Found them there cheaper than they were available online. Thank the Lord for the blessing. God Bless and have a great day!

That is fantastic! $100 a drum is nothing, same with the shoes and hardware kits. That is the exact outcome I was hoping for and at that price point it's practically a gift. Woohoo!

Many thanks Bob for keeping up with this thread and your many suggestions. This project would have been much more difficult and time consuming without your help. It's folks like you who make this such a great place to spend time and share. God Bless you and your family,
Ed

Cheap and awesome. Put stuff back together this morning. The springs are a PITA but it all worked out. Going to buff and polish the aluminum wheels before going back on. God is good!!

Nice work. We started buying new Webb and Gunite drums when I wrenched for the local PUD. It was actually cheaper than having them machined by our own in house machine shop. Our mechanics were not allowed to machine drums or rotors, it crossed Union lines with our machinists, even though we all belonged to the same mechanics and machinist Union. Go figure, government efficiency at its finest.

Great thread

Glad you got your brakes repaired at a very reasonable cost.

Do you happen to know the Make/model of your axles??

Tim and Alpine36, thanks for the compliments. Jim, here are a couple of pics of the axles. Looks like they are Eaton axles. I would guess the numbers on the axles are the model numbers as each side is different. The first pic is the passenger side. Second pic is the drivers side. Hope this helps. God bless all of you!
