Broken Lippert slide travel lock

How many have had the cable break on the slide travel lock?

I found the the main roadside rear lock cable had broken at the lower actuator. As replacements are $2,600 for the pair. Wow! I decided to attempt a repair. No pictures as could not face the shame of my poor welding skills.

The cable had broken where the original cable was welded into the bottle mechanism. I used a cutting wheel to cut the remaining cable that was welded into the slot. Then pressed the old cable into the slot and welded it in. The slot is one inch. This meant I needed to add an inch in the cable. There is a kind of spring at the mid point. Two bent rod pieces welded with a slight play in the cable between. I cut a 3 inch long 3/4 wide piece of 3/16 steel with 1 long slot on each end leaving 1 of solid in middle. Cut my cable an 1 1/2 below the that spring apparatus and welded the 2 ends into the slots. $2600 saved today.

Good job. A little McGyver action saves the day......and the wallet. I found mine to be real hard to move last year. Sprayed a bunch of Teflon lubricant and actuated the mechanism a bunch of times. They work so much better now.

Wooohh yeah those were fun... I had the rear of the passenger lock get folded over and bent up. had to take it apart and straighten the top lock piece, fix the broken cable, (where it welded into the top hook.) LOTS of moving parts

A HINT. Silver soldering the cable is a lot easier than welding to the slide lock arms.
