The previous owners left it there in a new un-opened package, so I thought I would use it. We were in CT for a week and no matter how much chemicals we put in we could not get rid of the smell. it was definitely the black tank. Since then I have learnt some things on this site that I never knew before.

When the smell started the first thing we did was to turn the bathroom fan on. Bad idea I found out. Secondly, we have never put water in when we empty the tank, so I assume solid waste splashed up the sides and probably dried, so the chemicals did no good. I will check and make sure the vent cap is not plugged.

From now on when we dump I will pre-fill with 8-10 gallons of fresh water. I measured a 5 gallon pale and dumped it in the toilet to see how much a full bowl is; it was around 2 gallons filled to the top, so I will use that as a guide when I need to pre-fill. In fact What I will be doing in the future is when leaving for a trip put 8-10 gallons of water with 1 cascade dishwasher cube. Apparently it is good for deposits and it has dawn. The swishing while driving will have a cleaning effect. Any one ever done this? This is our third MH and I am still learning!!!!

Adding some detergent to the tank will help break down deposits. Not sure you need 8 gallons of water to start, that's probably 5-10% of total capacity! 2-3 gallons is plenty after tank has been emptied. If you read this, it has lots of good ideas:

I use ice cubes. I'll drain the black tank and hold the flush on the toilet to fill the black tank a couple of inches. Put a bag of ice down the toilet. And drive. They scrape the tank real clean. Then I'll dump at my next stop.
