Carefree awning post bracket loose and will not tighten up

Has anybody done this repair ? As you can see it has worn and elongated the bolt holes.

RV tech looked at it and said i need to get to 'huck' bolts installed to fill the holes better and make the connection tight.

Thanks for any advice !

Chuck

Chuck-

On my coach, the bracket came from Carefree (of Colorado) with the horizontally-elongated holes. They allow you to adjust the location of the bracket fore-and-aft. The brackets at the top of the awning arms are similar. I remounted the brackets during last Summer's repairs, moving the lower ones just a bit from their "original" locations. The arms folded more smoothly afterwards.

Thanks ! Didn't think about doing that... Now are these the lag bolts you used also ?

Chuck-

The Carefree installation manual for my coach's awning lists the sizes of the lag screws; they are 2-1/2" and 3" long and 1/4" diameter. I ordered them from Fastenal in 316 stainless (typical link here). You could also order them from Bolt Depot (typical link here).

Proper caulking is essential to prevent water intrusion along the lag bolt threads.

Not sure if I understand your problem, but can you drill bracket to 3/8" and use same holes with new 3/8 bolts ?

Thanks ! The holes have become elongated causing the bracket to sage and gouging into the side walls. Plus the post is now loose and will not tighten, throwing off the top alignment making it hard to unlock the the awning.

But i like your thought on going up to a 3/8 bolt.

You might also use an adhesive sealant on bracket along with larger bolts.

I made a repair on a diffrent camper diffrent application. Where I had striped the siding where bolts went into the siding. I installed larger bolts and a year or two latter back to the same issue. Either move them to new location, or what I did was installed rivit nuts and ss bolts.
