Cayman stepwell

I have an 06 Cayman. the stepwell cover is stuck in the retracted position.
I did see a post and thread from 2009 but nothing recently.
My question is how do you get the motor and linkage when in the closed position. When I toggle the dash switch you can faintly hear the motor or relay, so seems to be getting 12v power. Previous post says to remove two screws behind the carpeted cover (vertical carpeted piece at the step inside the MH) to access the motor. Before i start tearing into the carpet to find the screws, I would like to know if anyone out there has any other ideas on how to access the mechanism.
They don't make it easy.
thanks in advance
Jim

It's common for the face plate to get jammed when the step is fully retracted. Try wiggling and pulling the faceplate while someone activates the switch. Often that will get it to extend.
