Changing the oil and filter in a 12.5 W Onan Generator

My rig has an Onan HDKCB 12.5 W generator and I will be doing an oil and filter change.

I'll be using Amsoil synthetic oil - 10W30 for 0 deg to 100 deg or 15W40 10 deg to 105 deg - but am unsure of the filter. I've heard that there is a larger - long life - filter (expensive) and the standard one 122-0893 (less expensive). Does anyone out there know what the part number is for this longer life filter and recommendation of where to purchase?

Thanks!!!

The parts manual for my HDCAB only shows one filter for the oil. Never have seen a larger filter, but one may exist.

Based on the Cummins Operator's Manual, it's either a HDKCD or an HDKCB.

onan oil filter

Wix 51334 about $6. A case of 12 is $52.80. That's $4.40 ea. This is for Onan 12.5K with Isuzu engine. I am sure similar filters and prices are available for Kuboto engine.

"Isuzu engine" I'll check. But I'd though mine was a Cummins.

I don't have a need for a 'longer life' filter. It get's changed with the oil.

Cummins Onan RV Generator Handbook

Most of what you need to know is in here.

Cummins Onan RV Generator Handbook

While Onan is a Cummins product line, they typically incorporate Kubota or Isuzu diesel engines in generators used in our Class A coaches.

There are a couple of plates on your generator that identify the engine and give part numbers for oil, fuel, and air filters.

I searched the internet and found new-old-stock, genuine Onan filters at reasonable prices. Try Northwest RV Supply as a starting point.

Your generator will be happier with regular exercise than with synthetic oil and little exercise.

FWIW

There is no Cummins engine small enough for an RV generator. They use Isuzu or Kubota. Mine is a 10K with a Kubota.

Cummins owns Onan, which causes some to expect a Cummins engine. The big Onan generators do use a Cummins.

I use the Walmart filter equivalent ST-16 I think, and the absolute cheapest diesel oil. I put 200-290 hours on it and change it. Since I live 9 months a year on the road that is usually every 2 weeks. Cost for oil and filter is under $19.

6000 hours and happy as a pig in chit.
