FXdave: You questioned if a diode might be at the heart of your CC problem. Most "intermittent" problems (sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't) usually can be sourced to a connector problem or relay contacts that are failing (but there are few or no relays in the CC system). So a diode failure would be far down on my list. The check engine light flicker is probably not associated either.
In terms of troubleshooting an intermittent problem, you can help this forum by telling us more of what you've observed. For example, are any of your CC On/Off or RESUME/SET switches lighted switches when the CC is supposed to be "on"? Do you have a dash light that says "CRUISE" when cruise is activated? How about the dash warning lights that glow when the ignition switch is initially turned ON (i.e., the "idiot light" check routine). If anything associated with the CC is now glowing, that might indicate an electrical connector that is failing.
Kent mentioned braking. As you know, touching the brake or applying the engine brake will kill the current CC "on" state, and the CC "resume" function should re-apply the CC function. So it is possible that a maladjusted brake-light switch could be your "intermittent" problem source. Have a friend or your spouse follow you in a vehicle for a period of time (the rougher the road, the better). If the brake lights flicker ON incorrectly....
