Damaged a Tire

Noticed this cut in the sidewall while doing the daily pressure check. We’re two weeks into a six week trip and have been boondocking, which involved a drive down some rocky roads. Nothing too outlandish, but it’s all I can think of that would have done this.

We’re currently in a KOA in Richfield, UT, waiting for the tire shops to open on Monday.

Can you tell how deep the cut is? Just looking at it doesn't seem too bad.

What is your intention going to a tire shop, inspect, patch, replace???
Do you have a TPMS.

Looks so straight and well defined, I wonder if it was not vandalism from a knife blade.

Blowing up the picture, it looks like the tire hit something. I would go out at night and take a flashlight and see if it is into the cord. If there is no cord showing, I personally would run the tire and keep a eye on it. As a service manager, I have seen much worse on trade ins. Those I would not have run, but yours is not that bad looking.

It does, but you can see some scuffing around it.

I looked and could see no cord showing and using a tooth pick the crack is 1/4” deep. How thick are sidewalks? This is a steer tire. If I leave it on the coach, is there a reason to move it to the rear?

Steer, it’s not over a few days old. I put 303 on the tires before we left on the 15th and it was not there then.

Dennis,

I think he means how old the tire is not how old the cut is.

If it is a 1/4 inch deep on the front I would not take any chances and replace the tire. Truckers are always looking for good tires for trailers, especially ones that are used off road and you probably can sell it to the tire shop for maybe $100.
