Dash A/C blows out shredded plastic film
My '08 Cayman XL dash A/C has started blowing out pieces of thin black plastic film. I first thought it was coming from the flex tubes that run to the vents but after investigating them internally they are ok. Has anyone had a similar issue and found the cause?
Thank you for your suggestions.

My 07 Neptune XL does the same thing. Best I could tell it's a thin rubber like lining on the inside of the ductwork coming loose. It doesn't appear to be a problem or leaving holes in the ductwork on mine so I don't worry about it.

Yes that sounds like the same thing. It's slowly getting worse so I took a couple flex tubes out and they appear ok on the inside. I'm thinking something in the distribution box or a tube from the internal air recirculation duct.

Mason Dixon, could very well be deeper in than the flex tubes. Mine seems to work good with no loss of airflow so I haven't worried too much about it. Let me know what u find if you dig deeper to see what's the cause. Thanks

If it was possible for you to remove the blower motor, it has the blower wheel attached, it may have sucked up something and be slowly coming apart. You can check it if you can get it out. If you can remove it, look in that hole into the air box. There may be a piece in there against the coil.

The blower is accessible from the front firewall. I’ll remove it and look around from there. Now is when a flexible bore scope would be real handy.

I've ordered a wi-fi flex scope to use with my cellphone. So I hope to find the cause without major disassembly. I'll post what I find.

Ours was the aluminum shiny AC tape --- by the time I could look at it, it had shredded the tape and stopped coming out

Well I found the cause to the black film coming out of the dash ducts. It's the film on the firewall foam that's inside the system. I took the blower off and could see the film peeling away from the foam. Cleaned out what I could and will clean it up as it comes.
Stay safe and enjoy!
