Dash and console lights

I normally don't drive at night. A couple nights ago I had to drive during the night and I could not get my dash lights to have any type of back light or any of the side console lights to be light up. In the past I know I had this but not now.

What's the trick?
I turned the headlights on using the "Pull" handle and turned it all the way to where I thought the lights should have become brighter but nothing happened. Been playing with it off and on over the last couple day but still nothing.

So now to be safe I've planned my stops before dark and won't leave before daylight.

On the plus side I have a Silverleaf that gives me all the engine and transmission info and a GPS that has speed etc. So I know I'm OK regarding this but it bugs me that my dash lights don't have a back light.

Jim, it's possible the headlight switch needs replacing, just a thought! God Bless, Ed & Sylvia

That's kinda what I figure but looking at all options. Would this also control the individual switch lights?

As I recall, the headlight switch will dim the individual switches as well as the gauges..

Does sound like the switch is worn out.

I didn't realize mine was separate rotary switch on far left of dash but I think you have owned yours far longer than I had at the time.
Check the ground bus bar over generator on firewall as well as switch.

I know mine use to work, just making sure I check all potential fixes before tackling the switch. I'm traveling now but will look at it when I get back home.

Jim, went out to the MH and checked the headlight switch and yes, it does control the individual switch lights. We don't have the additional rotary switch for the control of the dash lights. Just have the headlight switch. God Bless, Ed & Sylvia

At the risk of sounding insulting, I assume you rotated the switch counter-clockwise to increase the brightness, and clockwise to decrease? This seems kind of counter-intuitive and for a moment last fall I was a bit stymied when I turned the brightness on my rig "all the way up" and had no lights, only to realize that I was turning it the wrong way.

Well, this sucks.
Ordered an received a new headlight switch and installed it.

All was good the individual switch lights worked, but I could smell the rheostat getting hot. Shut it off and did some other things. Couple hours later I tried it again and everything was working including the switch lights and then the switch lights went out.

My guess is that there is too much of a load on the switch with all the switch lights working, I think I've got about 20 total, side console, dash, center console and passenger console.

I'm going to check it again tomorrow but I'm not going to throw more money at this problem unless someone has a sure fire solution!!!

Any suggestions.

Is there a better quality switch that can handle the amp draw of all the switch lights, which I believe is the problem.

Jim,

Just seems strange a new switch would go bad so quickly. Have you done anything else to electrical?

Putting the headlights on a relay may be an option if they are running through the switch now. Lots of folks have done it with great results, including brighter headlights.

Up until Sunday I had not done anything different. But with the help of another member I jumpered the Driving light relay so I can control it independent of the headlights. This should have actually helped the headlight switch.

Yesterday, after I installed the headlight switch I did replace the original Halogen driving lights with LED, which again should have helped the amp draw.

Not sure when the headlight switch failed. Like I said, in the past we seldom drove at night. I just noticed on my last trip that none of the switches were lighting up and/or the dash instruments weren't lighting up. Not a big deal as I use the Silverleaf to monitor most of the functions and my GPS for speed.

I'm not going to put too much thought into this and even less money.
