Check your ground. They should be daisy chained and I think white wires labeled as ground. Follow to ground block and check for corrosion. Run a temporary wire to check see if works. If not that check for power coming from headlight switch, aka. the dimmer. Use your volt ohm meter to check.

Thanks, I guess it could be the headlight switch gone bad.

You may as temporary fix find the wire on headlight switch that feeds dash lights and run 12 volts to it until you are able to replace switch if that's your problem. A simple 12 volt switch from radio shack would allow you to turn off and on. This will get you some light at night til you can find a new switch. I am not sure of brand or possible replacement. Chances are it is an older vehicle model that you could buy at Advance auto or Auto Z one or the like. Good luck

Hi Had the same problem on our 99. Replace the headlight switch and it should be good to go. There are some posts here with the part number I think we used a mid 70 Chev S-10

I have been researching the same problem on our 2001 HR Imperial. Mine was intermittent and now is completely inoperative. In reading a ton of articles, the headlight switch appears to be an AC Delco D1588. There is a problem in that the D1588 switch evidently has either 7 or 8 tabs for connections. It is important to get the correct one.
Good luck and safe travels!

Just replaced mine and it was from a '73 Chevy C10. The new one has the extra terminal but it's for something I didn't need anyway. It worked fine and viola the driver's map reading light now works also. BTW - at least on the Dynasty the dash lights are also controlled by the ICC switch - i.e. they blink when you flash to signal passing truck is clear to return to your lane. One more thing - the rotation is backwards from what I thought it should be for some reason.

The rotation of the lock washer that holds it to the dash or the rotation of the knob to dim the lights?

Oops - that would be rotation of the knob to dim the dash lights or turn on the drivers map light.

It's a common problem because that crappy switch they use has an exposed rheostat for the dash light brightness and the map light.
The slider on the rheostat keeps breaking the coiled wire. Then you lose your dash lights. One day I'll out a separate rheostat in just for the dash light and map light. In 2 years I just changed my second headlight switch.
