Diesel fuel

How is everybody dealing with these absurd fuel prices. I wanted to head to Columbus, GA, Fort Bennington for a scout dog handler reunion. I haven’t seen some of my Vietnam dog handler buddies since VN. It’s 2500 miles from Sacramento to Columbus. Round trip it would cost me $4000 in just fuel. That’s beyond ridiculous. I’m afraid my 04 Monica will have to be put up for sale. Sad.

I just got into this rving life, still building my wagon. Picked a great time to get a MDT with a 7.6l diesel.

I know what ya mean. I just bought a new Denali 1500. I opted for the 6.2 rather than the Durimax because of the diesel prices and cost to maintain.

Don't Burn Your Bridges just Yet.!!!...Research the TDS fuel card and Mudflap fueling system..
The Mudflap can be downloaded to your phone and is simple to use.. The TDS /Open Roads is a card that is tied to your bank account and works like a debit card.. ie: no funds in the account..No fuel purchase.
Both are geared for trucking companies and Diesel RV'ers..

I Used the Mudflap last time I fueled, and saved 43 cents off the posted pump price..($75. savings just on one fueling)

I am trying to figure the math on this 5000 miles round trip assume 7 mpg that’s 714 gal of fuel current national retail cost for diesel is 5$ that’s 3400.00 but with open roads or any other discount program you can get the price per gal down about 40 cents that’s 3200.

You are also traveling to an area of the country that has much lower prices. My guess the fuel for that trip is less than 2700.00.

Total cost of the trip via RV would still be less than fly, drive, stay.

All in all still a better way to travel and costs less if you compare to other options aside from the bus.

I also think the way to look at it is the difference in what you would have paid vs what you have to pay today. That coupled with the discount plans available overall the added cost is acceptable. Certainly not enough to halt plans and sell off the rig.

Looked at hotel rooms , airfare , rental cars recently ? Inflation isn’t just for rv’ers. Price out that and rving doesn’t seem as bad . I do feel badly for those on low “just get by” fixed incomes. I may shorten my travels some but one needs to weigh things out. At 70 plus I don’t have time to sit around waiting for the reaper watching my cash. Lifetime events put off don’t happen again and they aren’t taking cash in the afterlife. My reunion has been canceled 2 years in a row due to the pandemic concerns and 4 people I know are since gone (due to other age reasons) that I’ll never have a chance to talk to.
Re giving up rving … I think there are many who don’t see it the way I do, and will be selling, or at least sitting at home worried . Many have certainly got used to that the last couple years. Maybe I can more easily find spaces with all the cancellations!

I never fingered in the fuel discount cards. The TSD card seems like it might help save on fuel cost, however in the Columbus, GA area , Gas Buddy shows it between $5 and 6.30 per gal. California is stuck above $6. With Open Roads you can possibly save up to .40 per gal. If it’s $5.00 you now pay $4.60. That’s in a perfect discount world. Your right it can drop the cost to around $3300. I’m not sure why you think it could be as low as $2700. It does get cheaper in certain areas, not much lower than $5 per gal at this time. I’m not sure $3300-$2700 will get me $600 cheaper. Still it’s a gamble either way.

I am not sure where you are getting 5 to 6 per Gallon in Columbus GA. Right now it shows about $4.50 to 4.90 a gallon before any discounts. truck stops may be more. Circle K and others are rapidly expanding stations with Truck pumps at good prices. I use them along with my5% rebate on my Sams Mastercard. I averaged less than 4.60 a gallon in returning from Florida in late March and Apr. through GA, South Carolina and North Carolina.

Well with diesel at a 1.55+ /L here in Edmonton where we have pretty much the lowest prices in the country we have decided to postpone our trip back to N.S. this year. We're still going to do a couple trips just not as far. Hopefully next year the prices won't be as bad and if they are I guess we just bite the bullet and go anyway.

Did you park it/not drive it in 2008 and/or 2012?

RV Fuel prices are one of the variables but I'd rather pay for fuel vs Motel Rooms, rental cars etc

Plan so you don't by fuel in CA.
