Diplomat headlight switch

Headlight and marker lights work, but instrument cluster and dash switches do not. Pulled switch out and went to parts store and got a replacement. Put it back in and now everything works, but after 10-20 seconds the headlights will go out, rest of lights still work. Shut switch off for few seconds and headlights will come back on. Thought maybe a relay, but swapped the fog light and headlight relay and same thing. Plugged old switch back in and headlights will stay on, but just not instrument cluster lights. Any ideas?

The headlight switch used by various coach builders were originally from GM vehicles of the 70s. I'll try and find a picture and post it .

This type of switch has an internal circuit breaker and it sounds like the one you purchased is defective ; particularly since the new switch has a different issue than the original.

EDIT : Found a picture ; Chevy headlight switch .

Good morning Dillman31; Don't be surprised that a brand-new part right out of the box can be defective. It's possible. Sounds like the rheostat for the dash lights was bad and that is common. Not 100% sure but remembering that in the headlight circuit might have a circuit breaker that resets if there is too much of an amp draw in that circuit. I think it is in the headlight switch! You might want to try a different headlight switch from a different manufacture to see if you have better luck. If not, you might need to check the amp draw on the headlights. I would also check the grounds in that circuit as a bad ground would lead to a high amp draw. Hope this gets you going and good luck!

Could be a bad (new) switch.

Friend replaced his and handed me one so I could replace mine. Had to fix it before installation.

OK thanks guys. That is what I was leaning towards as well but was reluctant to spend another $30-$40. Guess I'll run down to Napa and try a different one tonight. Keep you posted.
