Dometic roof unit 06 Signature

Turned unit on , started cooling but can smell like something is burning?? Went up top took cover off, no smell, no smoke, all seems normal. Other 2 units ok. I can run the fan only, no smell but when compressor kicks in , slight smell??i haven’t run it over 5 mins, afraid too. Not sure where to start, any thoughts or advice is appreciated.

Asheville, I had a similar deal about 6 or 7 years ago. Woke up to a burning smell coming from the rear Dometic AC on my 07 Neptune. I cut off all AC and finally narrowed it down to the rear AC. Turned out it was the compressor start capacitor. When I got to it, the top of the capacitor was blown out, and smelled just like the burning smell we had noticed inside. The fan still ran fine but the compressor would not start. I ordered a new capacitor and had it overnight shipped ($$) and put it in the next day. Luckily, that fixed it.

I would start by checking the wire connections at the breaker .
The 120 v elect connection to my A/C is in an area above the air filter
that would be a good place to check too .
Are you sure the compressor was running when you checked on the roof ?

Yes as mentioned previously, I would be very confident it is the capacitor. You can access from the top of coach. We had ours go out on us 2 ears ago, changed both of them to be safe , the most used AC is the one that will go first of course, Usually . It may still run but it is weak and will blow out completely. Simple fix.

As Rolly Zimmer said, its accessed from the top. After removing the top cover there's a black box (IIRC) and its inside that box. There are 2 inside. One is for the compressor and one for fan. I cant recall which is which but I would check both and see if either are bulging on the top where the wires hook up. Be cautious as those things hold a pretty fair amount of juice and can zap you. HTH

X2 on the capacitor holding a charge .

Down on the ground it might just knock the xxxx out of a fella

Up there you might make an unplanned trip down .

I would short across them to discharge then replace both .

PTCR is the most common crispy critter I find & it is sometimes hidden under the capacitors and overlooked. I usually replace it witha Supco SPP6 https://www.supco.com/web/supco_live/products/SPP6.html

Our rear AC did something similar. It was the heat pump reversing solenoid. I replaced the solenoid and the unit continued to function.

But, I figured it was time to replace the entire AC. I purchased a new 15,000 btu heat pump from PPL and installed it. It works so well that now I'm thinking about replacing the other two.
Detailed procedures

We too had smoke coming from our middle ac. Turned out to be the fan motor. Had it replaced and all is well.

Last year or maybe the year before someone with a similar coach had a small fire that originated in the 120ac Junction box that is located from the inside when you drop down the decorative panel below the ac.
