Door awning gone bad

Yesterday my door awning stopped working. I have a strong suspicion that the motor gear has stripped, because the motor is working but not turning the rool bar.

How do I get the motor out? The manual that I have got hold of is telling me that the end cap has screws that can be removed but that is not the case on my awning.

It seems that none of the caps - end or topcover - can be easily dismounted.

I just went through this. Check out this thread: Entry Door Awning Parts

I got a lot of help from folks to complete the project and it was fairly inexpensive to fix.

Good luck.

The plastic end caps just snap on but take a little work to get them to come off. If you look at them closely you can see the tabs. Believe there are 3 tabs per cap.

Thanks Ken.

The caps came off. Not easily but they did come off.

I have now taken the rollbar off and exposed the motor.

The gear hub is broken (top left in photo) and so is the plastic part that fits into the gear hub (buttom right on photo). This part has come off the end of the motor, but if this is a replaceable part, or if it is a part of the motor I am uncertain.

Now I need to locate the relevant parts

The newly designed motors have metal drive ends so much better. You have to purchase the entire motor, at least I did when my PLASTIC drive ends broke.

I will do that, but I am struggling finding the correct replacement part. My motor reads SIMU T3.5CC 06/14, but nothing comes up when Googling. I have seen the number R001531 pop up, but when I go to Carefree's webpage and do a search, nothing comes up. I obviously want to get the right part the first time.

I have written to Carefree with my serial number and hope they will provide me with a parts number.

Thanks Pcurt

This is probably the one, but I don't think it has been fitted with the needed add-on's for the use in a Carefree awning, and this is what I am looking for. The motor that I have is working fine - it's the add-on's that has broken, and as I understand it the "new" version now has metal "bits" added rather than plastic.

Quick message from Mr Tony Sorasavong at Carefree:

The awning you have is called a Freedom Over the Door. The motor replacement would be part number R001189 and there will be a metal gear in place of the plastic gear. Also, the motor will be orange in color and slightly longer which means all components in the roller tube will have to be removed before installation.

I found it on Amazon at $84.98 and free shipping. Now ordered

If you look closely at the aluminum piece on your motor you will see that the splines are slightly curved, they should be straight. This is how mine looked and determined the drive was actually bent. Recommend you replace the motor with new design and you will get rid of the plastic piece and have a stronger design. Check on Amazon once you determine the proper motor to replace yours.

Scroll to response 7 for a list of information and pictures. I made notes on some of the pictures.

The new motor gear fingers were too tight so using a drill bit they were smoothed out a tiny bit.

I got the new motor today and it looks exactly like you showed/told me.

I have tested the fit, and no modifications will be needed to get it into the roller. Maybe Carefree have listened to user comments and have shaved a bit of the offending bracket.

This is what the roller looks like and where the motor slides into.
