Dropped screw in fuel tank

OK I could make some big excuse how it happened but I was changing my fuel sensor and accidentally dropped one of the screws in the tank. I've spent about an hour with a magnetic pick-up, but no luck even feeling it. Of course it is a little tricky because the magnet wants to stick to the tank. Certainly not what I want but what happens if I can't find it?

Nothing except you get to buy a new screw.

The pickup is above the tank bottom. It won't suck it up.

Personally I wouldn't worry about it.
However until I found an "exact replacement screw"... I would worry that I might not be able to find one.

If you still want to try, take a fairly strong magnet and slide it around the outside of the tank near the low spots where you think the screw may be.

Once the magnet attracts the screw, you can slide it to a place under the fuel sensor. Then try your magnetic pick-up. You might even try zip-tying a stick to your pick-up such that the stick extends about 1/8 or 3/16 inch past the magnet. The idea here is to prevent the pick-up from sticking to the tank, but let the screw become attached to the magnet.

Don't give up too early....

Regards,

Dan

Thanks for the replies. I totally forgot that I had bought stainless replacement screws. Will have to get one and see if by chance it is magnetic. Otherwise it looks like it is staying. Liked the magnet on the outside of the tank idea though.

I always heard Jamie hyneman say that (walrus beard); not adam savage.
Good saying for this though.

Well, your fuel mileage should improve now that you've magnetized all the diesel fuel.

Wasn't there some dumb magnet thing you could attach to your fuel line to give you increased this and that?

A screw rolling around the fuel tank may not be all bad. I wouldn't be worried in the least as long as the fuel pick up and not in the bottom of the tank and I would be stunned if that was the case

Happy Trails
