I just went through mine and fixed it up. It seems it can be replaced with a modern one but then you also need to replace the circuit boards in all your A/C units as well. So, more $$.
On mine the on-off switch had a solder crack making it turn itself off. This was easy to fix and I re-flowed all the solder joints while I was at it. Also, the buttons are a known issue. You can replace them but it's hard to find the buttons. You can also take them apart and bend the little tabs in them to get them working again. If you do that, press them lightly and don't bottom them out and they will probably last a long time.
