Electrical guidance - inverter issues?
Hi All,
2006 La Palma
Having some electrical issues, and kind of stumped!
My issues:
- brand new house batteries
- chassis batteries two years old
- seems like I have inverter issues not charging the battery + seems like I have tripped something, but can't find what
- checked voltage at inverter while hooked up to shore power - is only reading about 10V [I read it should be about 13.5V]
- House batteries will not charge while hooked up, so I charged batteries with automotive charger overnight [while coach was plugged in]. by evening, all four batteries were reading 12V.
- following day, house batteries dropped to 12V on one, and 2V on the other [so I assume something is draining it down + it is not charging from shore power?]
Also,... seems something has tripped, as coach seems to have no power [battery monitors says low battery + lights are very, very dim.]
- Doesn't seem to even recognize I am plugged into shore power.
- Also cannot start generator. If it helps, I did have code 32 during above, then a new code 12-9 [over voltage?]. Now I don't seem to get anything [I assume because batteries are too low?]
Any ideas would be appreciated, before I booked an RV-doctor's appointment!
I am a rookie..... so hopefully some idiotic thing I am missing!
Thanks,
jb

Brand new house batteries - 12V on one battery and 2V on the other tells me something is not right with the second battery - have you confirmed the wiring was reconnected correctly? If yes, then the 2V battery may have a internal short.
I would re-check wiring, then disconnect shore power, shut off main house battery disconnect, then disconnect battery wiring (take picture first to help re-connect). Let batteries "rest" for 30 minutes and re-test - compare against your current readings. A bad battery will still read 2V.
By the way, do you have 2 house batteries or 4 - your post infers both numbers. Possibly 4-6V?
Hope this gets you started.
Brian

hi Brian,
Thanks for the reply.
Sorry for the confusion. I have two batteries for the house, and two for the chassis [four in total].
If it helps, when driving home today [my third test somewhat], I wanted to see if driving the RV charged the house batteries. When I got home [about a 45 minute drive], the readings on the house batteries were 12V and 6.5V. So it was better, but not full yet. [I don't know how long of a drive it would take to fully charge them].
I tried my best to take special note of wiring the new batteries the same as old. I think they are correct, but....

The battery wires are not correct.
If correct , meaning, in parallel , they would read the same volts.
Make sure house batteries are + to + and - to -.

In addition, the house positive cable should be connected to the + of battery 1, and the house negative cable should be connected to - of battery 2.

That is a debatable issue, that didn't need to be brought up, right now.
If the OP says he has the cables figured out, then, that could be worth mentioning.
