Entry Door Retainer

This forum is full of posts where owners have problems with that scissor like device. I have to adjust the rivet with a dolly and hammer all the time. Others have removed the retainer and re-engineered the design. I saw this thread in the Fleetwood owners forum and wonder if a gas spring could be adapted to use in our Monaco's? This is the first time I have seen a gas spring used on the bottom of the door.

Nice find Marv, it looks like a good fix. After a closer look at my door, the Monaco door to the American Dream door are very different from each other in the design of the hinges and the screen door. Those differences alone may be the biggest challenges.

I would have to drill a rather large hole through my screen door to "fix" it like that...???......Dennis

I called Monaco yesterday and they told me they have a replacement for $129 + shipping. This is robbery for two small pieces of steel. I tried to take the old one off and found the screws are so tight that I broke one. I decided to bend the metal up to make better contact. This will work for a while.

Dennis: I never pursued this any further than a quick glance at that thread. I just went outside and checked my door. You are correct. The screen door would have to go! I wonder if those American coaches have a screen?? Back to the drawing board!

Seems to me if the gas shock was on the outside of the door it should work. I would be harder to close, but it would stay open.

I have seen other units with a gas shock on the outside. VERY UGLY! I would use clothespins, duct tape and bungee cords before mounting that device on the outside.

Very small C clamp attached at the rivet joint holds ours open. Clears the screen door so it works with the door opened on windy days. Sometimes simple is better.
