Fridge Access Panel Leaking

We just went through 4 days of rain here in Coburg. On the morning of the 4th day we noticed our carpet on the slideout in front of the fidge was wet.
After looking around it appears our exterior access panel to the rear of the fridge has been leaking for some time. This was the first time we noticed it and it has not seen this kind of rain for a few years. We have a residential fridge with solid painted aluminum fridge access panel on the wall of the coach. (The access panel is the same as a standard fridge panel but solid aluminum not a vented plastic panel. Upon closer inspection this is not a real good design.

Fortunately we caught befor there was any really bad water damage. Other that a little damage on the interior wall panel.

Upon inspecting the panel there is a thin foam gasket that really wasn;t doing that great of a job. After checking on line and with camping world, I couldn't find any gasket or weatherstrip thin enough to really ensure that it wouldn't leak again.

Since I don't really need to get back there all that often, for now I have put 1/8'"x 3/4" putty in place of the leaking gasket. Didn't know what else I could use to trust it not to leak again. At least the putty should seal it and prevent anymore leaks.

Just wanted to give you all a heads up.

Mine leaked there recently but it was the water supply to the ice maker.
All of my previous rigs had a 'dam' of thick dicor just behind where the access door fits in. The idea is to not let the water run in there. I made a dam on this rig as it didn't have one at all. I used some wood, wrapped it in eternabond and attached it inside, then sealed it. No leaks thus far.

Will probably go that way, but for now I want to make sure that it's sealed and has a chance to dry out properly. After a month or so in the Desert I should be sure that it has dried out.
