Fuel Filter clogged with grease

On my trip to CA this winter, we had a loss of engine power just east of ABQ.

Stopped for the night, and changed my filters the next morning. The first-in-line-from-the-tank filter (the one not mounted on the engine; the one with the water-seperator at the bottom) had black gooey stuff blocking most of the holes on the filter's top (the outside ring of holes).

Just to be safe, I'll changes this filter again soon. The gooey stuff looked just like lube grease. Very black in color. It looked like my filter had clogged up with leeches. Yuck!!

Anyone else experience this?

Maybe your fuel is gelling from the cold. Run some fuel conditioner and new filters. Top up as soon as you can with winter fuel.

Sounds like you have algae/black slime. Get some biocide treatment to kill the algae and get plenty of spare filters and keep changing them out until all the dead algae makes it through your tank and filters.

Agreed, grease would dissolve in diesel fuel, has to be algae which looks like a black slime.
Could also go to a marina or boat repair shop, they should be able to clean the fuel.

Thanks all. I'm taking steps to correct my fuel problem. I'll let you know what I find and what I did to fix.

Black slime

I Have ran into this problem several times, this can and will destroy your entire fuel system,Be sure you also change Filter on the (Aqua-Hot if you have one),change the Fuel Nozzle, inside the supply line to the fuel pump is a small screen, clean that also.
