Fuel Gage Malfunction
I have a 2001 Diplomat. My fuel gage has begun dancing all over the dial recently as I drive. Once in awhile it will settle on what I think is an accurate fuel level (based on keeping track of fuel input and miles traveled, estimating my mpg). But I would rather have a functioning gage.
This behavior in a car would lead me to assume that the sending unit is going bad. Not sure if that logic applies to DP or not. This motorhome is the first deisel of any kind that I've owned.
To begin searching for a replacement part do you think I would search by the chassis make/model or the coach make/model? I don't know where to begin looking to find a replacement.
Any productive input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Tom

Hi Tom! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!
I would check for loose connections on the back of the gauge and at the sending unit. Keep her between the ditches!
Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

Tom,
I had an issue with my tach jumping all over the place. The grounding wire in the generator compartment didn't have a good connection. I also know that some have run a separate ground to the instrument.
For quite a while, monaco used CENTROID PRODUCTS - Computerized Tank Display - Electronic Senders - capacitive fuel gauges for the sending unit if you want to replace it.

Thanks very much for the link. I need to get under the dash and make sure the connections on the back of the gage are good and I'll check the wiring diagram as well to see if the gage has a separate ground.
Thanks to all for the feedback.
Tom

Tom, be sure to check for loose connections on the tank sensor also!

I seem to recall reading that these tank sensing units get dirty over time. Seems that units returned to the mfgr for repair are always ok once they are cleaned. Or I don't recall correctly! My gauge doesn't work either, but the pickup tubes for Gen and AQH have shortened to the point that I have to keep the tank more than half full anyway.

My generator pick up tube was too short as well. Couldn't run it after about 300 miles. Since we are in the desert areas, we run it most of the time to have the roof airs on. I extended the tube about 2 inches and really is nice to drive without constantly looking for fuel stops.
there are numerous posts on this forum regarding that change out. Pretty easy to do. Took me about 30 minutes.
