getting ready to put in new flooring
We're getting ready to put in new flooring. I want to remove the front drawer box, the one dead center on the floor underneath the dashboard.
I pulled out the drawers, and removed all the screws I could find. The box is loose from the floor, but it is still fastened to the dashboard. I can't figure this thing out.
Has anybody done this? I would appreciate some help here.
Thanks,
Jim Sanderson

Jim,
That set of drawers may be adding support to the dash. If it rattles or bounces up in down after removing the drawers you may want to add a brace under there.
Opps, I just re-read your post and I guess you are only removing it to put the new flooring in and then will re-install.

nodine, Yes, I think he is only removing it to place the flooring down. I don't think he is leaving it out ...at least I hope not!

You may want to put a 2 x 4 brace cut to length under that part of the dash while you are doing the work. I pulled mine and in two weeks the dash had dropped 1/2" because of it. There are 2 screws (1 on each side of the box) connecting it to the firewall. There were also 2 or 3 going down into the floor through the grout joints. And there were 3 (one on the drivers side and 2 on the passenger side) that went up into the dash. Probably stronger than most of the above floor cabinet connections.
You will probably also have to lift up on the front edge of the dash to get it to pull out. DO NOT use the handicapped rail to pull up on.

I just did this on my Rambler to put in the laminate flooring. It has two screws in front going up into the dash. Then you have to have someone lift up on the dash while you pull the entire box out. If you are putting laminate in you will not want to put screws down back into the floor. I used a good thick bead of silicone on the inside where it meets the floor. New screws into the top as well.

Got it! Another fellow had experienced it before, he was right, and I'll pass it on.
The vinyl dashboard had 'melted' to the lacquer on the wood. I very carefully worked a very thin putty knife between the two until they had separated. And....out it came!
Thanks,
