Getting to the back of the dash in '09 Navigator
We just bought a new to us 2009 HR Navigator. It has a Kenwood in dash GPS unit. I would like to upgrade the maps and the manual says there is an plug in for an SD card on the back of the unit. It further says this is located on the back of the dash. Anyone know how to get to the "back of the dash"?

I found a picture of the dash of an 09 Navigator on line. My guess is that you have to pull the section of dash panel that holds the AC controls, Radio, and your GPS. I would guess the SD card slot is on the back.
You could try to call HR and talk to them, they still have a tech help line and could better answer your questions.

If you have the manual for the radio, does it tell you how to pull it out of the dash? That seems like it would be the easiest way to get to the back of the radio.

Thanks Jim, I'll call them on Monday before tearing into it from the front. According to what I can find on the internet it appears to be 2 units; the one buried in the dash is the main unit that would have the SD card slot.

Mike, The manuals that came with the RV have some pretty thorough instructions for operating but very little about anything else. I even searched Crutchfield for installation but it only shows model specific, like Chevy, Ford Etc.

Is the Kenwood site not helpful? I would think you could get a manual from there. We did for ours, although older.

Do you have an access panel on the top of your dash. Mine has one with two screws that hold it on. With it removed, I can access the back of the radio.

RVNewbie55,
Remove the Kenwood unit itself which will allow you to access the back of it. There is no need to remove the dash to accomplish what you are trying to do.

I found the manual on the Ken-wood site. However, it does not show any detail as to the SD Card.

My radio/gps is located in the console, or center dash. (I'll take a pic today). From the info I have found though, it appears that the GPS unit is actually a separate box that is buried somewhere behind the display screen.

ZackMan, as I noted to TankCJ, I think there is a separate box for the actual gps unit, and that would have the SD-card slot. I actually did remove all dozen plus of the screws in the center dash or console and tilted it out enough to discover that there is no SD-slot on the back of the head unit. That is when I got on the internet and can find this same gps for sale and the pics show just a box and not ahead unit or display. So that lead me to think there must be a separate "brain" box. Does this make sense?

My GPS unit is in a cabinet with a fold down door under the radio all the way on the floor under the cup holders.

My gps unit is in the cabinet above the entry door, but I don't think it has an SD port.

Hi Bob,
What you conveyed does make sense. I'll need to look at my unit again to see if the GPS module has a separate SD port.
