Grand Canyon south rim question
Howdy,
About to travel to the Grand Canyon and Lake Powell. I have a question about driving my 40plq along the South Rim, more specifically on Hwy 64 from 180 heading east to Cameron on 89.
Is this doable with a toad? Should I expect lots of tight roads and elevation changes?
Thanks for any input.

Leave your RV at the Williams RV park and take the train from the park to the rim. Fun train ride. Nice park. Nice little town located on old hwy 66.

I'm hopeing more answer, I too plan on going up 64, staying at south rim then on up 89 toward Zion. We are in a 40' MH pulling a toad. We leave in a couple weeks!

If you find an answer about Hwy 64 off this forum please share. We will be attempting that drive or an alternate route this coming Saturday.

I know the route I described is doable, others with similar rigs have done it. Just don't know how narrow, steep, etc. it will be. Do you have reservations at the South Rim?

I have done 89. It's fine! Don't be in a hurry.
I must scratch my head at those that would go right past the North Rim without spending some time there. Higher altitude, cooler, less crowds, a soooo beautiful.

On the North rim, you can't see the river very well, some are hung up about that. In reality the North rim is MUCH nicer.

Staying at the Grand Canyon Camper Village in Tusayan AZ.
Went to Yellowstone and Jackson Hole last year and experienced some steep grades causing some overheating. That is my main concern although I now have better knowledge about driving properly in those conditions.

Ha Dave have you drove the 180 and 64 north from I-40 to south rim then east to 89?
Where are you refering to as the North Rim, what campground and roads?
See you at high noon partner!

High Noon, and my trusty rusty squirt pistols are ready!
Years ago but not in a MH. I expect it is just fine. Saw trucks and RVs going West on 64 from 89.
Have done 89 and 160 without problems. Me thinks you worry too much!
North Rim is 89 North to Alt89 to Jacob Lake.
Nice CGs at North Rim. National Park is good, and this one is super.

Take your time and you will be fine.
We did this route in March/April this year. Spent a night in Williams, then 3 nights at Trailer Village at the South Rim before heading off to Monument Valley over the route (East on 64 then North on 89) that you are planning.
64 was a very nice two lane undulating (only small hills to go up and down, mostly down as you lose elevation from the Devils watch tower at the eastern end of the Canyon as you travel out to 89) road that I wouldn't hesitate to take any size vehicle over. We travelled it in a 33 foot Class C but we saw many larger RV's with toads all along that route.
I don't recall any corners or turns that required any significant braking at all. If I remember correctly we maintained a pretty steady speed the whole way.
I owned a Bus Company for 15 years and would have happily driven one of our 40 or 45 footers over any of those roads.

X2 on that!
From the South you see brighter reds and yellows (sun behind you), and more blue from the North (sun in front of you and you are a few 1000 feet higher). They are both Grand, but none should be missed!

Exiting the canyon east to Cameron is easy with a big rig. No problems whatsoever.
