I forgot to mention that while we were at Wildwood recently, someone had hacked into my wireless-internet and changed the password on my router (I guess that is one way to keep busy while waiting for the techs to come by). Not that I had any high-level security on it because I often let others have access to my dish if they ask, but it was kinda weird to find myself locked-out of my own system.

A simple wired-connection to reset the router and I was back in business.

I'm actually still chuckling over it all. Too bad it wasn't on April 1st.

Children love to play. We had our rv into a rv shop in Louisiana in Jan/Feb. Both times we found that someone had played with our tv system. Figured they spent half a day watching tv and drinking beer and the other half a day thinking of what to tell us they did.

The work of a bored geek. When you say "hacked", did you have WEP or WPA security set up and someone broke through that security? Or, did you have the system open and wireless administration turned on? Odds of an average guy hacking into a secured router is pretty slim. If you keep your router open, be sure to turn off remote-wireless administration. Also make sure you are using a good password on the administration - people usually get into routers when they see the default SSID show up and figure that the admin password is the default one as well.

Change it up and keep the honest guys out

I've never "hacked" anyones router but many of them out there are available to have their setting modified. Simply ping the tcp?ip address and that'll bring up the password window on most of them. Since most people don't change the default passwords that'll get you into their router. I think many people don't have a clue as to what they are doing when they change the passwords etc in a router, they prbably think it's theirs!!

Y'all made some good points about keeping honest people honest. Might be something we should all check once in awhile.

Sometimes I'll turn on WEP (btw, it's my old landline phone-number, in case anyone wants to play detective ) but a lot of the time (like recently) it's left wide-open. I've been leaving it like that mostly at non-wifi locations so's other folks can get Internet, and used to do it regularly at Wildwood before they had wireless access for us.

I suppose turn-about is fair-play. On the few occasions when we find ourselves back at the stick-house, one of my neighbors has Verizon FIOS wide-open and I must admit to having jumped on there a time or two when I needed a large download.

Technology seems to keep pace with "Ne'er Do Wells" (or is it the other way around?)
